D&D 4E Errata and Changes to 4e Since Release

I have the three 4e core books (PH, DMG, MM). As I read through forums, I hear about how 4e is a living game with evolving and changing rules.

When I go to the D&D site, I find a 20 page errata document. Is that all I need to get my three 4e core books up to date? Is there elsewhere I should look for significant changes or does that single errata document cover it?

The one that you want is THIS version. Realize they explain the change and then print the whole new text or stat block of the item in question so it looks huge when its really not.

There is roughly something like 10 pages of actual errata to the 3 core books when you boil it down. A good chunk of it is also stuff that was reprinted in PHB2 in its new form. If you're going to pick up a PHB2 anyway then the majority of it you don't need much. A lot of the rest is nitty stuff like the rules didn't clearly state that ANY action where you were moving could allow you to jump, climb, etc. Stuff like that. It is all good stuff but if you read through it it is pretty easy to just remember. Personally I went through with a highlighter and just highlighted any changed text, then just printed out the changed text from the PDF and stuck it in a 3 tab paper binder. If I REALLY need it I can look it up. Hasn't happened yet, though we use CB so that pretty well takes care of needing to reference powers and such.

I think the upcoming Rules Compendium will be a good collection of the errata from the previous books. You will just need to worry about the errata for that book, and the rest moving foward. We don't play with a lot of books at our table, but I plan on having that one handy for sure.

Not really. By FAR the vast majority of errata is to specific feats, powers, class features, and items. None of those things are in the Rules Compendium. There's actually very few changes to the general rules of the game.

That is what the character builder is for. Even if you don't want to subscribe every month, 10$ is worth it every few months to update your Character Builder. I could probably come up with a database and track all of it myself, but I'd rather pay WotC 10$ and do something more productive with my time.

I could see if you are not using mounted combat or flying much, but conditions, skills?

There are a couple of useful things, sure. What I was disagreeing with is that the Rules Compendium was a comprehensive replacement for the errata on all the previous books. I'd say that out of the over 100 pages of errata, maybe 5 pages of it are printed in the Rules Compendium.

Oh, its obviously not compiled errata.

But if its 5 pages (and I'm feeling its at least a little more)...those are pages that are getting a lot of use!
