"Erratta'ed Shield Spell"

So it's my understanding that they meant to erratta the sheild spell but just didn't get around to it. If they had, what were they going to erratta it to?

Was it
1)"Provides a +7 Cover bonus to AC" (but no actual cover)
or
2)"Provides a +7 Cover bonus to AC and +3 on reflex saves" (but no actual cover).
or 3) Something else

Shield does not prevent atttacks of opportunity.

To my knowledge, the +3 cover bonus to Ref saves has never been in dispute. The only issue is whether shield provides actual cover; if it does, then you can't make AoOs against someone protected by a shield.

My understanding was that it in the 2nd printing of the PHB it was changed to give a +7 cover bonus to AC, nothing else, no protection from AoO's no +3 to reflex saves, that's it. And frankly even then it's one of the best 1st level spells there is.

From my 2nd printing PHB:

Shield creates an invisible, mobile disk of force that hovers in front of you. It negates magic missile attacks directed at you. The disk also intercepts attacks, providing three-quarters cover (+7 AC and +3 on Reflex saves against attacks that affect an area).

Common house rule

My understanding was that many campaigns are using the "errata'd" version because otherwise shield is too powerful, but the change never actually made it into an official WoTC publication.

(+7 cover bonus to AC, blocks magic missile, no other cover bonuses apply)
