Escape codes

Is there any way to escape star (*) characters so that they show up as stars, rather than being 'helpfully' transformed into italic or bold BB markup? Other than surrounding them with ?

I literally have no idea what this thread is about. If I didn’t recognise one of the usernames I’d assume this is just some bots posting random words and characters. Anybody want to clue me in? In English, preferably?

If you surround words in stars in some programs doesn't it make them bold or italic? I'm not sure if it does that here.

ETA: Oh hey, it does! Italics if you put stars at the beginning and end.

I believe the OP is trying to use parts of text that the board is automatically converting to code/markup language.

The answer is that there is "code" tag, located next to the "spoiler" tag in the posting menu.

Code:
It looks like this </>

If you use asterisks without the code tag, the board converts it to italics.

Like this

With the code tag it looks

Code:
*Like this*

You can also manually activate the code tag by using (CODE) Say stuff (/CODE) But with brackets instead of parentheses.

In this context, an escape code is a special something that is typed to cause the rendering software to quit interpreting the string as formatting stuff and just show the next character.

Guessing the OP has issues with getting * to show normally. Different OS, language, code set, etc can cause weirdness.

I've had it happen, when I wanted to make a list using asterixes, and it converted it all to italics. I am happy to learn about escape codes, seeing as I really can't stand it when what I write gets changed by programming to something else. I'd rather format things manually.
