Escape codes

I literally have no idea what this thread is about. If I didn’t recognise one of the usernames I’d assume this is just some bots posting random words and characters. Anybody want to clue me in? In English, preferably?

Escape characters/codes, are characters put before other special characters, to prevent the 'special' action from taking place.

Its a thing in IT.

And here I am just highlighting words and hitting the button for italics. If I'm feeling frisky, I might use the control and I keys on the keyboard to make italics.

I know nothing about actual coding though.

I believe the OP is trying to use parts of text that the board is automatically converting to code/markup language.

The answer is that there is "code" tag, located next to the "spoiler" tag in the posting menu.

Code:
It looks like this </>

If you use asterisks without the code tag, the board converts it to italics.

Like this

With the code tag it looks

Code:
*Like this*

You can also manually activate the code tag by using (CODE) Say stuff (/CODE) But with brackets instead of parentheses.
Yes, and I was trying to ask if there was some way other than using the in-line code tags. And my post got munged by the forum software.

It turns out there are [ icode ] tags as well as [ code ] tags here.

This is italic and this is *starred*. Using the icode tags wrapped around the [icode]*starred*[/icode] word.

But code and icode tags render as looking "off," at least in my browser, so I was wondering if the forum's pseudo-markdown (turning starred words into italics) had an escape, the way actual markdown has backslash as an escape.
