I might have to steal this idea for my Final Fantasy campaign setting. I'm gonna include it as a construct of the evil dark elves.

Here's how I'd do it: strange things have been happening lately. Forests growing overnight, mountains turning into valleys. Along with this changing terrain come dungeons, ancient ruins which were known not to exist before. Your players explore the dungeons, and find clues as to why this is going on.
