Eternal Ruins Kickstarter
I have not heard much rumblings about this game until fairly recently, but it looks interesting. The premise is that your characters wake up from within a statue and then find themselves wandering an unending sprawl of ruins filled with spirits, demons, robotic servitors, and other wanderers. So there is an emphasis on exploration, camping, and cooking. It's apparently inspired by games like Ico, The Last Guardian, Zelda, Hollow Knight, as well as Studio Ghibli. Looking through the demo files, I've been pretty impressed with what I see. The creator of the game is also the artist. The game uses the Wildsea system, which itself was derived from Blades in the Dark. Felix Isaacs, the author/creator of Wildsea, is also a writer for this book as well.
CORE CONCEPTS
THE RUINS ARE ENDLESS
The Eternal Ruins are an ancient megastructure that seems to continue forever, stretching out in all directions and even rebuilding itself into new formations over time. The labyrinthine nature of the ruins ensures that every journey is unique, filled with hidden chambers, forgotten temples, and countless mysteries waiting to be uncovered.
BORN FROM STONE
Wanderers are children who awaken from statues, seemingly at random. They have an innate knowledge of language and do not seem to age. Despite their mystical origins, wanderers are just like us - they are small, fragile beings in a vast and unforgiving place, navigating the ruins in search of purpose and survival.
SOLITUDE
There are no villages, towns, or cities inside the Eternal Ruins. There is no society, and no established knowledge or history of the world. Wanderers are mostly alone, with gatherings rarely exceeding five or six people. Encounters with other wanderers can be friendly or hostile, adding an element of uncertainty to every meeting.
A HOSTILE PLACE
The Eternal Ruins are fraught with dangers. Wanderers can get lost and starve, or slip and fall from great heights. Demons roam the halls seeking to consume souls, and ancient servitors carry out commands from a time long forgotten, posing a dire threat to any who cross their paths.
THE RUINS PROVIDE
Resourceful wanderers can find what they need within the ruins. Food such as roots, moss, mushrooms, and fish are plentiful, and water from fountains or streams is safe to drink. With time and patience, wanderers can scavenge or craft whatever else they need. Certain spirits specialize in crafting specific items, such as weapons or clothing, granting brief services in exchange for offerings.
A SPIRITUAL REALM
The ruins are home to numerous spirits who survive on worship and offerings. Powerful spirits hold shrines that are safe from demons and offer special favors in return for something valuable. These spirits are in a slow decline, shadows of their former power, but they can still provide significant aid to those who earn their favor.
ANCIENT SECRETS
The Eternal Ruins are a place of mystery, holding powerful knowledge for those who explore long enough. Forgotten secrets can be discovered in crumbling stone tablets, and Relics, powerful items capable of ancient magic, can be found deep within the ruins.
HOPE AND DESPAIR
Wanderers manage to find comfort in the dark, existential depths of the ruins. A fire and good food can restore hope, and traveling with a companion helps keep spirits high. However, losing hope can lead to despair, making wanderers vulnerable to demons.
