Ettins Are The DM's Friend!

SHARK

First Post
Greetings!

I was just thinking about how cool Ettins are. Ettins are not *too* stupid, they're big, strong, tough, and have *two* heads! Imagine the conversations that such creatures must have with each other over everything!:) Then, of course, one can expand and theorize about possible cultures for such creatures. Imagine what a whole town of these things might be like!:)

I was dming a session in my campaign recently that featured an encounter with a small group of Ettin Barbarians, and a fight developed over the party crossing a river while the ettins were wading in the river, trying to fish.

An upcoming encounter features a strange monastery of Lawful Evil Ettins who are fighters, clerics, and fighter/clerics of an evil tyrant god that preaches and demands loyalty, discipline, unity, and ruthlessness. The encounter will perhaps have a desperate struggle high up on the galleried entrance to the Great Temple, where the players will encounter a phalanx of elite Fighter/Cleric/Legendary Dreadnought ettins. It should be entertaining! Of course, there's also a chance that the players might take advantage of an opportunity to negotiate and or/infiltrate the strange ettin monastery in the form of some kind of embassy seeking to trade and negotiate.

What do you think of ettins? Do you use them often? What kind of cultures and social detail do you provide for them? What kind of class combinations and environments do you like to use with ettins?

Haven't used them much myself, most times when I need "big, dumb, tough and humanoid" I (unimaginatively) reach for an Ogre.

On a related note, I think a band called "Ettin" recorded a song called Eric Noah is my Half-Fiend Love Child...and it's actually a very pretty song:)

I'm thinking about a fighter/cleric ettin. And... one of his heads is the fighter, the other is the cleric. Ooh, I simply have to use this. :D

Are you crazy? Nothing worse for a GM than having to carry on a conversation between two PC's. Now you want them to be the same one!

Ettins are strictly comedy relief IMC "Duh I wanna smash him" "No I wanna rip him up" than a big fight breaks out stooge style between the two heads. I
Upon occasion I make them weird Fomor type things if I am going with a Celtic riff

I've used them before, a few times. I always want to run an encounter with them where the players have to outsmart the ettin by playing one head against the other. The players never seem interested in that, though. THey always either run away or try to kill it. They are not interested in playing head games with the ettins.

I have a great ettin miniature so my PCs always meet an ettin around 5th level. :)
I like ettins too, the MM stats leave them rather short on hp though due to mediocre CON.
