Ettledein (small city) - pop. 11,383

88% human
5% dwarf
7% other (halfling, gnome, half-elf, and elf primarily)

This city in southern Mittendien sits on the River Ettledein, at the point where the river becomes too shallow for the great sea barges to travel any further. It is the stoppoing point for all trade into Mittendien from any nation except Thoradur, and thus has a considerably rowdier atmosphere than any other Mittendienish city. Merchants peddle their wares freely to the highest bidder, with little control from the local government, which collects minimal tariffs on all shipments. Exotic wares from all over Aerde are available, if one knows whom and when to ask.

The city is ruled my a mayor appointed by the Baron Wolfdem, and is advised by a council composed of representatives from the five largest shipping companies that run through. The churches of Os and Horun, are also significant power centers, and the city guard is ever vigilant for external threats, the possibility of orcish attacks still very real.

Allard's Keep (large city) - pop. 20,236

91% human
3% dwarf
2% elf / half-elf
4% other (gnome, half-orc, halfling prominent)

The easternmost city in Mittendien is guarded strictly and firmly, under the constant and real threat of goblin and orcish assault. Still, the city thrives, even if the populace can be rather gruff to strangers. They are never openly hostile, however; after all, all trade from the ocean must pass beneath the city's towers, and the laws are very clear about proper interaction between foreign merchants and locals. The keep is possibly the mightiest fortress in the Kingdom, with the exception of the Great Castle in Dumeldein itself. The culmination of the past collaborations between humans and dwarves, the walls are fully 60 feet high and seamless granite, and the towers keep vigilant watch over the confluence of the Rivers Olderfen and Ettledein.

Allard's Keep is named for Warren Allard, a great warrior who fought against the orcs many years ago during the Age of Gods, and the city is still ruled by Allard's bloodline. Although the Baron has the right to appoint a Mayor, the current Baron, Heinrich Allard, rules the city directly, commanding great respect from his people by walking the walls each morning in guard livery. He is not a distant master; rather, he takes great care to be sensitive to the needs and desires of his people.
