D&D General Even Familiars Like Cats Can Level Up In Pets & Sidekicks

The humble housecat gets an upgrade!
One of the uses of Pets & Sidekicks (now on Kickstarter!) is to ensure your spellcaster's familiar is able to level up and keep pace with you--even down to the humble cat!

This, along with new character options such as the warlock's new Empowered Familiar invocation, or the new Familiarist wizard archetype, also applies to other potential familiars, whether cat, bat, rat, or something entirely different.

Pets & Sidekicks brings you allies, adversaries, pets, and companions who can level up alongside your characters.

Cue D&D 3E-era jokes about how a housecat could defeat a commoner).

The stat block above shows you the cat's unique heroic features. However, that's not the full story!
  • Like you, as a heroic companion levels up it gains hit dice, hit points, and proficiency bonuses.
  • At every odd level it gets to choose a combat training option like Attack Enhancement, First Blood, New Combat Maneuver, New Innate Spell, or New Spell Slot.
  • At levels 1, 4, 8, and 10 it gains heroic features which are listed in the stat block and which are unique to the creature.
  • Or it can choose from a menu of about 30 general heroic features like Awe-Inspiring, Dreadful Aspect, Fast Movement, Icky, Thunderous Stomp, and more.

How come you stole my list of halfling thief names? ;)

I'm wondering (for our necromancer) how the necromancer minion (that normally is based on the creators level) would be handled in this.

Could he have a "weaker" minion but then boost it with heroic features?

The A5E Necromancer has a feature that allows him to create a minion up to a certain CR (that increases by level). Could a necromancer decide but to fully use the CR for the undead but instead get a minion with a lower CR but instead add additional features from P&S?

Or are those rules only intended to "levelUp" those creatures that don't have any "growth rules"?
