A human teenage girl dressed in simple homespun steps into the tavern without introducing herself. Instead, she holds the door open to admit a richly attired minotaur. The lamplight catches the gilded tips of his long, black horns as he ducks his head out of the way of the doorframe; his hooves, striking dull notes on the wooden floor, also seem to have been dipped in gold. A gold hoop dangles from each ear and gold wire is threaded neatly through his heavy, braided mane. He wears a fine black tabard with gold brocade as a surcoat over his chainmail, and carries a shield painted with a simple, though obscure device--a gold ziggurat on a black field. Once inside, he gestures to the girl, who closes the door behind him and hastens over to the barkeep, apparently to order victuals for the two of them. "I am Ingvar Goldenhorn, of the line of Asterion the First," announces the gorgeously dressed minotaur in a voice loud enough to command attention. "My family has ruled the Great Labryinth, that which descends from the mountain peaks of Heaven's Eye to the Unknowable Depths, for a hundred generations and more. My father is Dalfred Goldenhorn the Fourth, who recovered the Book of Green Magic and many other treasures from the Ancient Library of Yrdrex, once thought lost forever. My great-grandmother Vikstra One-Ear defeated the undead army of Goreis the Necromancer in battle and slew the lich himself with a single blow. Indeed, the deeds of my ancestors are so many and so fine, that a dozen bards speaking in turn should exhaust their voices before they had described even half." The minotaur pauses, then continues in tone of solemn gravity. "Alas, my family name cannot be said to be without stain: my great-great-great-uncle Hvitserk, Devourer of the Human Hordes, might, with his excesses, have put an end to the line of Asterion forever. There are those among my kin who would excuse him, and say he was provoked. But what provocation could excuse such wanton cruelty? I say, let the fault be acknowledged, for only in the light of truth does honor truly shine; and though there be many whose suffering at the hands of the Devourer may give them just cause to curse my name and my family’s name forever, I, Ingvar Goldenhorn, say that I am ready to prove our worth through deeds, not words: and if it take a dozen, a hundred, a thousand noble and worthy accomplishments to cleanse our line of one villain's infamy, then let it be known that Ingvar Goldenhorn does not shrink from the challenge!" By this time, food has arrived at a table--a bowl of thin soup and a piece of hard bread for the girl, a leg of lamb and a bottle of wine for the minotaur--but the girl waits patiently in front of her food for the minotaur to finish speaking. "Now," the minotaur continues, his voice falling to a pleasant rumble, "let me hear from those of you who would strive for great things, for I have heard that in this place there are many such. How shall I know you?" And he waits in the doorway for responses. The girl, hands folded in her lap, continues to listen without eating. [sblock=for the historians]Totally up to other players if they want their character to know this stuff or not. Pretty obscure knowledge (less obscure for people from the Imperium): Heaven's Eye is a very tall mountain in Imperial frontier territory, most famous for the depradations (several generations ago) of the Devourer, a phenomenally aggressive and cruel monster who led an army of out of the mountains and committed hideous atrocities before he was finally stopped. Extremely obscure knowledge: everybody else that Ingvar mentioned.[/sblock] [sblock=Ingvar]New level 1 character, cleric|runepriest. Low priority.[/sblock]
