Ever get fixated on the BBEG?

First Post
Playing one of the published modules and out to rescue the slaves. We are using the pre-gen characters from KotS, currently 5th level: Tiefling Taclord, Halfling Rogue, Dwarf Fighter, Human Cleric, Elf Wizard, Dragonborn Paladin.

Finished large series of fights and pretty much used all resources (no Dailies, no Action Points, and very low on surges - some of us with none!). We find the slaves, but the guards are way too much for us in our current condition. We had already had an extended rest for the day, so it was time to withraw and prepare.

Random encounter with some ettercaps on the way home and we unload as best we can in the circumstances and it goes well enough for us.

Now, fully rested, and a couple of potions of healing later, we set off to the final showdown and to rescue the slaves. On the way we have some random encounter with (type unknown) nasties and are surprised. Looks straightforward to us and so we universally agree to not use APs or Dailies but to save them for the final showdown. The grin from the DM when he determined the random encounter should have been fair warning.

Next thing we know, following a couple of rounds of significantongoing damage, the dwarf fighter is making death saves and suddenly we are needing to throw the the whole box of dice at them in order to retrieve a dire situation. Dailies, APs, daily magic items, Second Winds, and healing surges start to be consumed rapidly.

Finally the adventurers triumph, but their plans for the day are in tatters.....

Most of this was the result of a lousy night with the dice. The PCs routinely failed to roll better than 3 or 4 (numerous natural 1s), with only an occasional foray into double digits. Many, many failed saving throws.

Note: the xps gained were the largest for the session, indicating the toughness of the fight.

As a DM, I get fixated on the bad guy the other way. You build the little guy, you buoy up his evil plans and send him out into the cruel hard world... and then some punk PCs come by and want to gank him just for indulging in evil self-expression? I say NOT FAIR!

*sniff* But I'm not bitter.

Stupid PCs.

The game would certainly be better off without them. ;)

Nonsense. With no BBEG there would be nothing to motivate adventurers to do anything. The world would soon be full of unemployed 30th level barkeeps.

Can't say I get that fixated, since the majority of the time there isn't one BBEG. It is usually lots of middle-men, mystery solving, conspiracy breaking, etc. If there is a BBEG it usually isn't like the council in a corporation, the presence that Far Realm has on people's minds, etc.

Heck, even if there is one in mind. It isn't the only one and may not come into existence, since it depends on where the PCs take the story and alter the world. Or they solve the mystery but never truly uncover who was behind it, and other such things.

It's a major problem for me. I'm a system mastery powergamer used to building PCs. My main "joy" from DMing has turned out to be the ability to try out a new build idea every week, almost as if a throwaway one-shot, from the (N)PC's perspective. It doesn't help that I struggle to think of dungeon layouts, plot hooks, and adventures. I'm generally at my best when I turn a session into a tactical wargame that challenges the players -- and just kinda build any plot or layouts off of that to lead to it. I'm just starting to actually plan out dungeons, and it's really hard. Early on, I'd literally just describe hallways and doors and different paths -- and just plop the stuff I worked on in the places the PCs actually went. Terribly lazy, but...I think I kept them fooled.
