Ever had a demon/devil/god show up by its name being spoken?

In a few AD&D1 rulebooks, there was a note saying that various demons/devils/gods had a 5% chance of showing up if their name was spoken. Anyone have this actually happen in a game?

Yep, twice: Asmodeus and Tyr.

The former was due to a big, big mistake by high-level PCs.

The latter was due to a PC getting rewarded for doing something INCREDIBLY unlikely.

No, although there have been a few close shaves. In the most recent arc of my Pathfinder game, Orcus is heavily involved in the game's plot. So I've been rolling every time the characters mention his name. They got to about 6th level before figuring out what was going on with no mishaps. Now they're very careful :D

Not exactly, but...

In my Greyhawk campaign, if you spoke Tharizdun's name there was a chance that demons would arrive and attack you. This happened several times; in face, one player took to shouting "THARIZDUN THARIZDUN THARIZDUN!!!" in extremis.

I had a number of 'loths* capable of overhearing the next ten words or so after you spoke their name aloud, though it was always a question of it being something intrinsic about them or because one PC had a yugoloth created artifact embedded in his ankle, and the next campaign because a PC was related to Larsdana Ap Neut.

*The Oinoloth, Helekanalaith the Keeper of the Tower Arcane, and Larsdana Ap Neut the previous and future Keeper

Yes, we had one player who liked to call out gods names whenever he got boared to see what would happen. He went through a lot of characters.

Of course. Both Orcus and Demogorgon showed up in response to people calling their names out. Both times it meant rolling up a whole group of new characters next time.

The rule at my table was - if the name Hastur is spoken three times there is a 10% chance he arrives.

Even though one player would do this occasionally I never rolled low enough to have it happen.

Back in 'The Day' if you died you could try a God Call-5% chance that you will be revived from the dead-in some fashion or another*.

*reincarnate was a common result.
