Ever had a demon/devil/god show up by its name being spoken?

Yes, once, it was Arioch. And it resulted in that player charater's death.

My players have never spoken another deity's name since. And that was 30 years ago!

when we were younger, players would do it from time to time because they were bored and wanted to see what would happen. the result was fairly predictable.

heh

I've always ran with the whole "name spoken three times in short succession draws attention" thing. What can I say, I like Beetlejuice and Lovecraft :)

There would be a 1%, 5%, or 10% chance of the being invoked taking some sort of action or more direct interest in what was going on. The percentage varied depending on how capricious the being is, and how involved they tend to get in the goings-on on the Prime. Of course, the chance is modified if they are on another plane or have some preexisting relationship to the being in question. And some beings (like Hastur or Beetlejuice :p) always show up, no roll required.

Over the years Hastur, Bane, Shar, Aerdrie, Mystra, Lolth, Kiaransalee, Tyr, Beshaba, a few Chosen, Malkazid, and a couple others that slip my mind have been invoked in this manner. And almost all were the unintentional results of conversations had in game.

Sometimes players do the "godshot" thing, invoking a deity's name in the hopes of receiving aid. In that case, its similar to the above except I have the players roll percentiles. Then I roll, and if my result is within a given range of theirs something might happen.

Nope never in my games.

My players have met a couple gods randomly in play, but only knew it once.

They have talked to gods fairly frequently of their own volition, especially in my last PBEM.

In a 3.5Ed RttToEE game, two of the PCs- mine and another- got cursed or marked or whatever by Tharizdun. And whatever the nature of the whammy was, whenever one of those PCs spoke Tharizdun's name, we had to go off and talk to the DM for a while...

...so we started referring to him as "The God Between Wednezdun and Frizdun."

The rule at my table was - if the name Hastur is spoken three times there is a 10% chance he arrives.

Even though one player would do this occasionally I never rolled low enough to have it happen.

If I remember correctly in the old Dieties and Demigods there was a bit under Hastur where if his name was spoken three times there was a 10% chance a 10HD minion showed up and if you survived that there was a 10% chance the big boy himself showed.

I played in a a campaign where one of the players, a cleric of (to be honest I can't rememeber and it's not relevant) was fond of converting at sword point and then sending the new convert on to meet his god. As you can imagine the DM was not thrilled with this. Suddenly we meet a lot of worshippers of Hastur.

"Who's your god?"

"Hastur! ...... Hastur, Hastur, Hastur!!!"

roll, roll

Bampf

fight ..... survive....

roll, roll.....

wait........

wait........

BIG sigh of relief

the rest of the party pummels the cleric......

equals no more forced conversions
