Ever write something and absolutely hate it?

Every single History essay I've written. Shame, causn I really like History. I mean, I'm looking at my most recenet one, having just printed it...

*Reads, muttering obsenities*

It's a load of rubbish :(

Oh well, I do like some stuff I write, plays, for example (memo to self: Continue with that.)

I've never yet met a creative person, artist or writer, who didn't think almost everything they did was craaaaaaap and wanted to endlessly tweak it. Make sure all your spelling and grammar is correct, then send that sucker off for publication over and over. Only editors can tell you if it's good enough or not, and you should look at their criticism if they offer it. All it costs you is some postage.

QFT.

The right writing group can also work wonders (if you don't want to send it out sans edits entirely). The WRONG writing group will nitpick every detail and tell you how derivative you are and how you ought to be challenging yourself more. The RIGHT reading group will tell you the parts that ought to change while also telling you which parts utterly rocked.

(Current novel progress: There was one line that I was really unsure about. It was a big important line, and I had no idea whether I was going to get it right by using what I had there. Every person who's given feedback so far has specifically mentioned that as being an awesome line. So, live and learn.)

I don't know that I've ever hated something I've written. I've been displeased because what I wrote didn't come out quite like I'd hoped. I think my biggest frustration with writing is trying not too be to oviously influenced by the writers I enjoy at that point in time. I have gone back and read stuff that I wrote in High School and College and while I thought it was great at the time, I can later instantly notice heavy influence by what I was reading at the time. I enjoy writing, but lately I've been sticking with drawing more.

Regularly for assigned essays, but never for anything I wrote for myself.

I usually like the things I write, but I suspect that it's because I do a lot of editing in my head before the fingers hit the keyboard. When I'm not happy with my prose I usually stop writing -- which is definitely not the best solution.

Yes.

Worse is it got published WITHOUT going through an editor first.

My next stage is trying to find a publisher/editor. Admittedly, I haven't really started looking yet...

I think I'll get some encouragement if someone reads it and says they like it.
