This isn't actually an attack on 4e, since exactly the same problem was evident in 3.0e and 3.5e (in earlier editions the prevailing advice was very strongly in favour of an in-campaign fix). However, on reading the new PHB, the following leapt out at me:

You are looking at an epic level power. At 21st level on, PCs are becoming near divinity. They do things PCs cannot normally do. They are LEGENDS. Death IS a speed bump to them. Indeed, in most of my D&D experience from levels 9+, death is a speed bump.

Considering how often my own PCs get shunted to the afterlife and back, I wouldn't mind a heroic sacrifice mechanic. Least I'd be doing something useful before going to chill with Pelor again...

Still, if you think thats too much, ban the Raise Dead ritual and I think you won't have to worry about those powers...

Regardless of your stance on 4E, the role death plays in RPGs, whatever ... that phrase, by itself, is definitely funny. :)

This. Which is why I'll be house-ruling the hell outta that stuff. Or just capping my game off somewhere below epic.
