Expanding Coup De Grace?

Weird Wars (from Pinnacle) expands the coup de grace rules for the sniper class. Essentially, if a sniper with a sniper rifle aims for a full round, and the target is not moving, he can make a coup de grace attack on the 2nd round.

That is about the only reasonable way of extending the coup de grace rules, IMHO.

Consider the "Coup de Grace" abilitiy of weapons in the Psionics Handbook. It is considered a +5 equivalent (same as Vorpal) except that it is usable 1/day. In a nutshell, you can declare one attack action to be an automatic coup de grace. So you instantly crit and the foe must make a Fort save or die.

What you are proposing is slightly weaker than above, but with unlimited uses per day.

Actually, it would make a good Epic feat I suppose but definitely "over-kill" for PCs under level 20!

The best part about this idea is that it leads to a domino effect where two equally-sized groups will kill each other off until only one creature is left standing.

Round 1

PC1 attacks Monster1, CDG, loses own dex to AC

Monster2 attacks PC1, CDG, loses own dex to AC

PC2 attacks Monster2, CDG, loses own dex to AC

Monster 3 attacks PC2, CDG, loses own dex to AC...

et al.

I love it. :p

Thanks guys

Now this is what messageboards are for.

How valuable it is to have an entire community to wake you up when you're in a state of rules catatonia.

I figured this is the response I would get from the coup de grace idea and I'm glad everbody snapped be back to reality.

Thanks,

Bavix

Since the original post asked also asked for alternatives, try this:

Take the original suggestion but modify so that:

1. Only applies to a group selected from the Ranger favoured enemy list (or make it a Ranger feat applying to all favoured enemies).

2. Attacker must still roll to hit, doing normal damage.

3. If the attack hits, save DC = damage.

4. If the save is made, half or no damage is done.
