Experience penalties

Just so I can get my head around this...

Lets take an elf paladin as an example. paladin is not the elf's preferred class.

If the character is a level 3 paladin, and take a level in fighter, there is no experience penalty. If that same character levels in fighter to have 5 levels in fighter, and 3 levels in paladin, there's still no experience penalty.

That sound right?

Nope. Elf favored class is wizard and this class is the only one ignored when conisdering XP penalty. Otherwise all classses beyond the first must remain within ONE level. So 2/3 or 4/5 and so on would be needed to not receivee that XP penalty. Both of your examples would have an XP penalty apply.

And where in the SRD does it actually say 1 level? Cause I've been looking for the XP table all day

The XP table is in the PHB only. It's NOT Open Gaming Content. WotC would like to leave you with an actual solid reason to need to buy the OHB.

As far as I can see the SRD does not say anything about Experience penalties from multiclassing aside from the races' various favored classes.

Yea I looked at the SRD at the last page of the Character Class section where it talks about multi-classing where it should say something. It doesn't. You'll just have to wait until you get a hold of the PHB or just take my word for it I'm afraid. Check out pg. 60 PHB XP for multiclass characters.

You can try playing a [FR] Wood Elf their favored class is ranger.

edit- of course you'll have to be part of a special paladin order that allows you to progress as part of a multi-class. Most don't.

Well... I wanted to make a half orc monk/fighter/shadowdancer (that strange enough?), but it has to use core 3.5 rules. You can't switch in and out with the monk, so I have to take the 3 levels at once.
