Experience points in the World's Largest Dungeon

What methods would you suggest for handing out experience points while playing this monster? Does the 'XP by EL' keep the players at about the right levels?

XP by EL works fine for me.
The PC's get a little overpowered early on, but that helps their survival.
Later that all smooths out and works perfectly.
