Explaining xp method to players

First Post
In the d&d rules forum there is a thread on repeat xp for encounters (started by FCWesel) that got me thinking.

Do players like to know how their xp is calculated? Also I wonder if this would have a real impact on what and how their characters do stuff...

My friends don't know my method and don't 'seem' to care.

Just a thought.

When I DM I just give out a total. However, my current DM writes up everything. I know how much I get for each encounter, and extra for good ideas or role playing. It's sort of cool to know specifically what I do that gives me XP, so I can make sure I continuie doing it.

My players don't care much how I determine XP.

I told the group at some point (early in the campaign) that I was giving equal shares in XP to every PC, and asked whether that was okay with them. They said yeah, thought a moment, and said, Yeah!! Of course!!!

As for the rest, they trust me to get it right.

Great group.

the group I DM seems to want it all broken down. if i just give out a numeric total, they start whining. :p

dunno if it actually helps them game better -- i always go strictly by the book for XP.

The players I've worked with (playing with or DMing for), generally don't want a detailed breakdown of each point. They'd like to know the policies. And, if at a given point their award is low for a specific reason ("You ran from every encounter", or ,"Your role-playing stank this session") they like to be told.
