Explosive Extradimensional Spaces

I know the rules for a bag of holding and a portable hole say that bad things happen if you mix them, but in general what happens? What happens when you mix two bags of holding? Or what happens when you take any extradimensional space into a Rope Trick? Or into a Mord's Magnificent Mansion? The rules seem very scant on this issue so I am trying to figure out if things just always go horribly bad or if two bags of holding can simply "stack", or for that matter if the rope trick and magnificent mansions spells are useful as opposed to simply deadly.

I'm looking for a rule, not a violent extrapolation of the bag/hole situation.

Personally I think the idea that a 2500gp bag of holding and a 2nd level rope trick spell can together fling a group of people to the Astral plane is unnecessary and silly, so I am looking into it here.

For years me and my friends have just taken it on faith the things always blow up if you mix extradimensional spaces, but I am beginning to wonder if that is just an urban myth left over from 2nd edition.

Of course if that’s the real ruling I am sure this could become a new and interesting form of assassination....

Oh, and 1st post so nice to meet all of you :)

Spells that create their own extradimentional space (Rope Trick, Mansion, etc) are not at risk from interaction with a 'static' ED space, such as a bag or hole. Only if you try to nest one static ED space within another is there a problem. Well, that and puncturing one with a sharp object, that is.

You happen to have a cite for that? Specifically, what are the precise effects of nesting extradimensional or nondimensional spaces within one another? The bag/hole interaction and the unspecific note in the description for the rope trick spell are already well known, but there are no other rules spelling out for things like a bag/bag interaction or even a more general one detailing the results of nesting extradimensional spaces in general. There's also the matter of deciding what kind of space a portable hole generates.

There is no universally accepted rule. Look to your DM for that.

Nice "meeting" you too.

make it up as you go along

Well my DM sent me here to ask, but unless someone else has some nuggets of wisdom to shed on this it looks like we will just have to make it up.
