Faerie Circle - get my players inside it!

incognito

First Post
Hellow folks.

I have an imporant plot hook. I want my character to ventur to the realm of the faerie. To do this, all they have to do is walk into a faerie circle (a rough cirlce of stones or mushrooms, 30' in radius)

I have a barbarian/cleric, two barbarian/rogues, and a druid. How do I get them INTO the faerie circle? The two barbarian rouges can be the suspicous type. The Druid is a new player - a big unknown.

What would make you all, as players, enter a rough circle of stones?

1. Have a white rabbit steal a character's pocketwatch and run into the circle, where it disappears.

2. Have the forest "awaken" in response to the party rebuffing the advances of a nymph. Wind blows, leaves swirl, branches knock into the PC's, doing damage. The only calm spot is in that strange circle of mushrooms.

3a. Have a leprechaun appear, then flee the PC's into the circle.

3b. The end of the rainbow is within the circle.

4. The PC druid or ranger recognizes some rare curative herbs that are worth a bundle of gold, but they are within the ring of mushrooms.

5. If it is winter, the grass and flowers within the mushroom circle are green and blooming, while outside the ring a blizzard is howling. Perhaps the party could get warm within the circle?

There's a pot of gold in the middle of the circle.

I mean, yes, that's an obvious trap, and no one in his right mind would go in there, but... there's a pot of gold in the middle of the circle.

Eventually, one of the characters should snap and go into the circle. When he disappers, the others will hopefully go after him when he doesn't come out again.

hide it. make it look like something else.

#1- have opponents fire on the party from the other side of the circle, when the PCs advance, *poof*!

#2 - if the PCs use ranged weapons, have the baddies retreat back farther, continue to assult the party, then refer to #1

or you could use another tactic like; the PCs are traveling through a forest. they pass through a faerie circle without knowing it. they continue to travel normally (because the terrain doesn't look any different), until you finally spring it on them. they've been in the Realm Of Faerie for days (or weeks, or months, depending on how long they travel through this forest).

High wind, so high they can't light a fire. The large, mossy standing stones will provide shelter.

While you are looking for a place to camp, a deep, roiling white mist seems to drift upward from the ground itself. You quickly unsheathe your weapons, looking for an enemy. All you see, however, is that you are standing in an oddly perfect circle of mushrooms, about thirty feet in radius. "Fishes and Feet," mutters the druid under his breath, for he recognizes the signs of a portal into the fey realms. "How could I have missed that?"

Schmoe: #5 hit's it exactly.

Party is in the cold mountains, they trip a snow slide, which drops them in to a small hidden valley, surrounded on all sides by mountains (the party CAN get out, if they wish, however).

Obsuring mist covers much of thier overhead view - but the valley is stragely in the middle of Spring! (which outside the circle winter 'rages').

so - who really is falling for the damsel in distess thing anymore?

I was thinking along these lines:

a. a small bag our pouch near to one of the edges on the opposite side of the clearing - maybe the party blithley walth through.

b. a dove, with a note tied to it's foot, and a broken wing, cooes softy in the circle.

c. An obvious threat, Something against nature, lies within the circle - being transported to the realm of the farie is a 'reward' of sorts.

So, I am looking for something insidious, or something that will make the character's curious. Or the players. Ideally both.

Thanks for the replies so far, by all means! I like the rainbow , and the thief idea. Pot of gold...hmmm...I dunno....

Simply have the party transported their in their sleep

Tell them that a spring rain is gradually turning into a thundering rain, as they travel through the valley they spy an old hut with a large oak tree growing through it up against the side of a hill

As the characters seek shelter they cross the faerie ring and enter the Faerie representation of the hut.

Once they are asleep the Faerie Warriors from the Hill enter the hut through the fireplace ( a dimensional door) and carry that magically sleeping characters into the fey realm. If a character wakens tell him that he sees many small elves carrying his fellows into a glowing tunnel where the fireplace was, and as he tries to catch them the tunnel disappears leaving the Fireplace in view

Yes the player can get into the tunnel (you should make it a Spellcraft or your choice of difficulty check)
