Failed saving throws

A PC has a condition that is getting worse as he fails saving throws (like the Petrifying Ray of the Beholder Eye Tyrant). An ally grants you a saving throw and you don't succeed. Does it count as a failed saving throw for the condition progression? Or are the failed saving throws at the end of your turn those that determine the progression?

This was recently cleared up in PHB2 (and was a housrule of mine before that), page 219, under Failed Saving Throw.

PHB2 said:
The effect doesn’t change if the creature fails a saving throw against it at a time other than the end of its turn.

No more Hobgoblins falling unconscous because they are more resilient.
