I am not sure if anyone has taken a look at Familiars: Couching Monkey, Hidden Toad, but it states that the wizard/sorceror can imbue character levels on their "familiar", giving them up to 8 levels of any type (depending on the focus they pick).
My question is this: I have an old character from an OLD campaign and an NPC from my current campaign where they already have character levels BEFORE the idea of this came up. Now, I know I can waive the rules for my characters but I wanted to know if I was the only one that has read this book and has gotten a bit confused by this ruling. A wizard/sorceror can get a humanoid as a familiar and the "familiar" would have to accept the binding, of course. Let me give you my character examples and maybe you can help me out.
15th level wizard (human illusionist) and "familiar" is an 8th level sorceror (weretiger)
-AND-
18th level blight mage (human) and "familiar" is a 14th level gun mage (vampire scion {thank the gods for Fang and Fury})
The first example is kinda in the gray area because the ECL added to the weretiger pushes it over the limit of 8 levels of embued talents, while I know the vampire scion is over the line.
Now, seeing ALL of this and rambling on for FAR TOO long, I guess my questions are:
1) Would you, if you were in my shoes, make these two familiars or regular followers?
2) Would a familiar like this gain levels on their own AFTER becoming "familiars"? There is nothing in the book, I am leaning towards yes, but I would love feedback.
And if this doesn't go here, you have the right to slap me silly with a fresh herring...
Thanks in advance!
