Familiar's using wands

I was trying to find a rule concerning this. Is it possible for a familiar to use a wand. After all with the right feats you can imbue them with spell casting ability. If you could let me know and what book/page number that would be appreciated.

The best way that I have seen this work is:

Improved Familiar - Imp (base), or Petal(MMIII) for a high chr
Loremaster - has UMD as an in-class skill

Since familiars have the same skills as its master, you can get a pretty impressive UMD on your familiar. At the second level of Loremaster(9th character), you have 12 ranks. This makes for a base of 14(imp) or 16(petal). Give the familiar a circlet of persuasion to get a 17(imp) or 19(petal). Thus if you have a petal familiar at 9th level your familiar can use any wand you give it. Further your familiar has a +19 UMD!

Can the familiar hold an item?

A wand must also be held (and pointed) to be used.

The wielder must also be able to speak clearly in order to activate the item.

Some familiars can do so some can not - it depends on the specific familier. I can't even imagine a snake familiar wielding a wand (can't hold an item).

This is why I mentioned Improved Familiar. Since of course a Imp or Petal can wield a wand. (Petals are tiny fey that have flower petals as wings)

Assuming the familiar can hold the wand, is the only way for the familiar to use a wand is using Use Magical Device??? The link doesn't allow for it to use it. Even if you imbue it with spell casting ability??

If I remember correctly Imbue gives your familiar the spells in the form of spell like abilities. Since it is not actual casting, it would not provide the ability to use scrolls and wands. The benefit of the UMD approach over any other is the the +19 UMD can be used on divine as well as arcane. Being able to get healing to a downed party member without using the actions of another member (which could be used to help end the fight instead) has an unquantifiable value to it.

That being said giving your familiar a Wand of Magic Missiles(Cl 9) is just awesome, if you don't mind burning treasure. If you do not like the idea of burning treasure at a rate of 125gp per round then there are reuseable scrolls from Eberron, though at a higher check. Since the familiar has a high chr, you do not need to worry about the normal stat requirements since you can use sorc for arcane and favored soul for divine. This leaves the roll for emulating a class ability (spell casting). You achieve a caster level equal to your check - 20. Thus you need a DC 29, yet if you exceed 20 you still emulate a caster level, thereby giving you a caster level check to successfully use the scroll. To make the reusable scrolls a worthwhile investment your party would have to use each one 10 times.

Correct and for wands - they do not have a spell list. Being imbued with a spell does not grant you a spell list.
