Fan websites of WotC products and updated setting, a connection?

No, I'm sure I heard something quite a while ago. I think I first heard of this when the announcement that Ravenloft would be licensed to SSS was made or maybe around the time of Oriental Adventures.

Things can always change, but last word I officially heard was that there were no viable Planescape license deals on the table. The *only* direct link I have heard about SSS and Planescape was the petition (and I pay pretty close attention to that being the webmaster of the Official Planescape Site).

Now if a deal were pending, I wouldn't necessarily be informed. But in the past I have gotten some clear "nothing happening" statements in the past, especially around the time you talk about. So I can't verify whether anything is currently happening, but I do know that back in the timeframe you are talking about - nothing was happening.

But you never know. If someone approaches WotC with a big enough check and solid enough business plan, they would be willing to talk.

I hope then that S&SS takes up the challenge. Mostly because it would be nice to see if they could get Monte and/or Sean to help out.

AND MIKE TOO!

I'm spreading this rumour NOW! If enough people believe it, it might come true :p

Actually we (the Kargatane) didn't release a 3.0 conversion before Arthaus picked up the license. (This is because Arthaus picked it up so quickly.) The only conversion we released prior to working on the Arthaus line was for Fear/Horror/Madness saves.

Biggie,

Hey that's how most people believe in reasons for fighting wars these days. Rumors. ;)

Mister Mangrum,

While that may be so, I do think we all agree here, Ravenloft wouldn't have been the same IF the Kargatane hadn't had some input in how things were done.

Alaric,

Yeah well you just have good taste. ;)

Should I venture to think that WotC fan sites have become the RPG version of "sweatshops" where the fans do a lot of work and company comes in on the cheap to clean it up and print it?
No.

Weis's game company bought the rights to Dragonlance, and essentially tossed out the "work" that had been done by the DL fan group--I know, I had the great fun of being there and butting heads with the control-freak who ran it.

The Ravenloft fan site, similiarly, was planning on doing a netbook, and AFAIK SSS had to do essentially all of the work themselves.

Of course, IMO the games could be _better_ if they were done by the fans and not the big names--but I'm biased, and I've gotten very sour on DL lately.

Not sure if I agree with what've heard regarding RL, but hey if you feel you got shafted in DL, my sympathies. I know that the Karg and S&SS had a decent relationship but that again was a lot of 3rd and 4th handed accounts. So I could be wrong. But that was just my view.

Actually, they hired us, so we wrote the books for them instead of on our own. Most of the 3E Ravenloft books published to date were in our production plans prior to Arthaus picking up the license.
