Fantasy Flight Games S&S ordering problem.

Hi, I pre-ordered Spells and Spellcraft from barnes and noble.com and they say they no longer have access to it and removed it from available for sale on their site although they have all the other FFG hardbacks for sale or pre-order. I contacted them to ask what was going on with their supply of the book since I have seen it in stores.

they replied:

We have attempted to contact the publisher of the title "Spells and Spellcraft". Unfortunately, there is no contact information for the publisher available, and this title is most likely not yet available or is out of print.

I think you might want to contact them.

Or have you severed relations with bn.com and I should not bother trying to follow up?

Did you email them or did you call them up and actually speak to someone? The reply sounds like it was a 'canned' responsed. I can speak from firsthand knowledge that in the B&N Retail Store's computer system there is no Publisher Information for Fantasy Flight Games (I've checked- the screen is blank). Unfortunately for small publishers for some reason their information does not make it into the system.

I would call 1-800-THE-BOOK, you should be able to actually talk to someone at B&N.com. I know for a fact that the B&N Retail stores have carried FFG items, in fact the store here in BR, LA still has in stock their board game for the Hobbit and the LotR expansion (I saw them tonight). Also T&T is abled to be ordered because I saw the numbers in the Ingram Warehouses today (though I don't remember if there were any in the B&N Distribution Center or if it was avalible from B&N.com). As of earlier today S&S was not in the B&N Distribution Center, nor was in any avalible warehouse, nor was it avalible from B&N.com. At first neither was T&T, but now it is, sometimes it takes a long time for some items.

Please note that B&N Retail Stores are one company listed on the NY Stock Exchange under the symbol: BKS; while B&N.com is a separate company listed on the NASDAQ under the symbol: BNBN. They were spun off in 1998. Furthermore if a book is not listed in the B&N Distribution Center nor is in any Ingram Warehouse (which is a different company) nor is avalible from B&N.com then the B&N Retail will not be able to order the item but will offer you (the customer) the publisher's information so you can contact the publisher, unfortunately for a lot of the smaller publishers their information is not the system.

Check my profile on what I do for a living and guess which company I work for. But remember I can not comfirm nor deny any guess you might make. ;)

Hey I've got to have some denyablity. :p

You will give me ten bucks for yours? That is the most generous thing I have ever seen on these boards. ;)

BN.com

FFG has never worked directly with BN.com (which is seperate from Barnes & Noble, with whom we do work). I'm pretty sure they get all their books and their availability listings from Ingram (the largest distributor to the book market) who we do sell to.

Just about everything in the book industry moves slower than the gaming industry. Ingram does not have Spells & Spellcraft yet, and I suspect that with the exception of Amazon.com, any place in the book market is going to be around a month behind the gaming industry. We're working to speed things up, but they're pretty much always going to be slower.

In general, if you want books right away, definitely go to your local game store -- if you don't have one in the area, I'm sure any large game store will be more than happy to preorder and ship you a title you're looking for.

I got an e-mail on May 2nd from R. R. Bowker stating, "Barnes & Noble has designated Books In Print as the sole source of all bibliographic data for North American publishers. This information will be used by all Barnes & Noble stores as well as Barnes & Noble.com."

I'd guess from this that they now just import the BIP database. I don't know about y'all, but I am often a bit behind in getting my BIP data entry in there...mainly because the book trade is a small and slow-to-respond part of the biz for us, and the two exceptions, the main customers we have there (like Amazon and Waldenbooks), don't rely on BIP anyhow -- just the oddball single-title order from an indie bookstore or a special order from B&N.

Well there goes my free copy of Wilderness and Wastelands... *mock* :(

Don't worry Will I still think S&S was a great book! I just can't use it right now!

S&S

I have seen all of the Fantasy Flight stuff at Borders, if that helps.

And I LOVED the supplemment. Good Job FFG!

It is worth the cash if you find it!
