Fantasy Football

How would you build a NFL [American] football player?

What ability scores? What class? What feats? What skills? What race? Spellcasters welcome [this is D&D fantasy football with Real World NFL rules].

25 point buy. 6th level. PHB only.

Take your pick of position (quarterback, def. lineman, etc.).

Can a football game be played with the core D&D rules?

I dunno, but I think Barry Sanders had Skill Focus [Escape Artist].

That being said, I think most of my team would be high strength barbarians. That speed boost is key, and pads are only light armor. my WRs and DBs would all be monks, but they would have those sissy WR shoulder pads which barely count as armor at all. QB? Hulking hurler.

Elway, Marino, Brady, Beg Ben = Mages (they had the magic...)

Barry Sanders... not only Skill Focus (Escape Artist), he definately had a feat allowing him to change direction during a charge...

On a more serious note... (or at least back to the thread),
All the stats are needed by different positions...

QB - NEEDS Charisma (leadership... question this, look at Ryan Leaf), Dexterity (at least middling scores, plus accuracy in D&D is a function of Dexterity), Intelligence (see the aforementioned Leaf). Strength helps a little... but I don't imagine that Peyton Manning or Tom Brady are big lifters.

Linemen, contrary to popular belief, actually do NEED a decent Intelligence score. Shifting defenses and the like require quick thinking and adaptability. They of course need high strength, decend CON, decent DEX...

Other than that, does your RB act like Barry Sanders (high Dex, High Wis - perception) or like the Bus? Are your receivers Jerry Rice or Randy Moss. Etc. It'd be fun to stat out some stars...

Fantasy Football. That game is called Bloodbowl. :)

I remember a game out of the movie: "Blood of heroes" similar to American Football :). That game was called jugger.

You'd have to have some limit on magic if you want to keep it friendly. :) Assuming it's not OK to just fireball the opposition, movement spells would obviously be very useful. A quick Dimension Door can put your ball-carrier permanently out of reach. And Expeditious retreat would be incredibly handy.

I've actually been putting together some notes on fleshing out the Spellflag game from Human Head's Redhurst setting. My thinking was making it playable in a manner similar to the DDM skirmish game (each player controls a whole team). I've been trying to address some of the issues that make sports hard to do with the d20 combat rules. If anybody's interested we could start another thread to discuss those kinds of questions.

Exactly what I was going to say; Blood Bowl's already a good fantasy football game, and trying to make a d20 version seems extremely unlikely to improve on it, frankly.

Of course, I sy that as I'm looking good to take the Chaos Cup in our league this season, and I'm the league leader in casualties caused. :D

But seriously, BloodBowl is a great game, plays fast, is quite simple yet tactically very deep; I seriously can't see what a D&D football offers.

It offers me a game I can play that I don't have to buy separately. :) I know a lot of people like Blood Bowl and I'd like to give it a try sometime, but I'm not going to invest in a (fairly expensive) miniatures-based game when I've already got D&D miniatures. Besides, I like to crunch up rules like this. It's fun.
