I'm just discovering this puppy :)

Is it fairly easy to put together and play a game with this software? Or does it require a lot of up-front work?

All depends.

Bad answer I know. It does not take me long to get a game going because I normally use modules that have information online already so I can grab maps and such without having to draw them myself. Type in some descriptions as required and good to go. So it may be a bit more prep time to play with FG but the acutal running of the game is not bad at all.

I do like using voice with it also, we keep all in character stuff typed, but when it comes to combat and the like, it is easier for the players to talk.

There is a lot of support for FG from Four Ugly monsters and thier tokens and maps, to Digital Adventures with thier rule sets and modules.

I believe there is a website or two (FG messageboards being one of them) where you can look for games to play or look for players.

Can anyone tell me about whether you can use Fantasy grounds with non-d20 games? I don't need it to do a lot of calcs for me.

Yes - but the coolness of the software's combat tracker is lost Ryan.

Users have been making rulesets for 1.0 for some time now, and 2.0 makes it even easier to make those rulesets. Even if progamming skills are lacking, someone might make the ruleset you're looking for.

I would have started a thread about this here, but I was...distracted last weekend by another announcement. ;)

It might take a bit of work if you want the game to flow smoothly. But if you were to play, say, a PDF AP, like, say, War of the Burning Sky, or, say, the Pathfinder games, copy/pasting from PDF for text and maps is a cinch.

Is there a place where people share programming for other rulesets?
