I prefer the subtler familiars. I chose dog, but I have used cats, ravens, crows, cats, and once a bat. Such animals are easy to explain in urban environments (well, maybe not the bat, but it all depends) and don't tend to announce your presence so dramatically.

Can you tell that my time playing Ars Magica has affected my D20ness? ;)

I don't think its just Ars Magica that influences this, its a bit of common sense ( ). A tiger taken down mainstreet should be something that is not allowed by the defenders of that city, and something the people would rightfully freak out about.

Two words: Dire Penguin!
That was a druid companion with personality.

Normally, I like bears and tigers for my companions (not as meat shields- as flankers and chargers. I am quite conservative in deploying animal companions)

Wow, my group has all the odd ones

I voted eagle, but I would have also voted for:
pseudo-dragon, falcon, dire weasel, hummingbird, mouse, clockwork creature and dire wolf.
My group really gets into the whole familiar/animal companion thing. One of these days, I really want to try a Shield Guardian, a Bogun, a Quasit, and some kind of large cat. They all have their advantages.

Tiger, for visual flair as much as for power.

Besides, if we're talking about power, lets just drop the pretenses, and acknowledge the power of a Riding Dog with a fistful of HD, or an Ape full power attacking with a Spiked Greatclub.
