Bride with White Hair 1 and 2 are both good....Thanks, TB...I'd forgotten about them.

For pure cheese, try to find "The Seven Golden Vampires". Dracula comes to China and unleashes horrifying blood-sucking action! (This movie is terrible, but worth the watching just for the sheer awfulness of it).

I see a few very good recommendations. I saw the "Five Venoms" last night - fun movie. Here are my other recommendations:

1. Master of the Flying Gulliotine
2.Zatiochi: The blind Swordsman
3. The 36th Chamber of Shaolin
4. The Shaolin Temple
5. Snake in the Eagles Shadow
and my recent favorite: Musa: the Warrior - this movie, was to me, as good as Crouching Tiger, if not better. The story line and characters are well developed and the ending is awesome - lots of shades of gray in the characters.

Some lesser-known gems that are well worth looking for:

1. Pedicab Driver:: Sammo Hung is much like God, only chubbier.
2. Encounter of the Spooky Kind:: see above
3. Mr. Vampire:: Chinese vampires are AWESOME

They're not really wuxia, though.

Ringo Lam's Burning Shaolin is REALLY good.

And for my money, the post-handover non-HK films have been very disappointing. I though Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was so-so (no film with Michelle Yeoh can be unsalvagable), and while I don't think I could say I HATED Hero (no film with Maggie Cheung can fail to please me), it certainly kind of, um, sucked, a goodly amount.

Can I just state for the record that Zhang Zhiyi is SO bad she can actually make me not like a movie that features Maggie Cheung? She is so awful. She's like the Chinese Pamela Anderson, only without the chest or such personality as Pam has. She can't act, she's not any prettier than half-a-dozen other actresses, and she's SO ANNOYING!!!!

Sorry. Had to vent.

Feel MUCH better now, thanks. :D

My top four are Hero, House of Flying Daggers, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Legend of Drunken Master. I haven't seen a lot of the older films mentioned - I can't find a video store with a decent selection outside of mainstream family/comedy/drama/action.

The Once Upon A Time series is definitely cool. I liked Hero and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon as well. Oh, and Shaolin Soccer. ;)

All the Jackie Chan films, despite being great, are not wuxia films...

I'm afraid right now all I can do is "me toos"... Hero, House of Flying Daggers, OUATIC, Fong Sai Yuk I and II, The Bride with White Hair (I and II... in both these cases the first film is better than the second.)

Ah! One film which hasn't been mentioned, not a great film but one which definitely holds a place in my heart, is the superhero/wuxia film The Heroic Trio. Babies are being stolen from a hospital in modern Hong Kong; there's a demon/wizard villain, a masked martial artist, gun-toting "Thief Catcher", chain-wielding "invisible woman" (played by Michelle Yeoh) and a maniac with a flying guillotine. The ending has terrible special effects but the film is just plain fun.

Also Wing Chun, a film with Michelle Yeoh in the title role, is a pretty fun film that might qualify as wuxia? I definitely remember some leaping going on, and a fight between two people standing on a spear protruding through a stone wall.

Yeah, The Heroic Trio is AWESOME. Maggie Cheung in fishnet stockings, smoking a stogie and riding a Harley. I'm sold.

It's truly brilliant. Dunno if it's wuxia, but it's brilliant.

Another oldie but goodie is Come Drink With Me, with the great Cheng Pei Pei ("Jade Fox" from CTHD) showing just how cool Chinese Kung-Fu Girls can really be.

Which is pretty darn cool, if you didn't already know. :D
