Favorite Third-Party Settings

I'd really take a look at Iron Kingdoms. I know it's not vanilla D&D but it's extremely well done (ie. well conceived).

If I wasn't homebrewing I would be doing that setting.

I'm looking for some different settings, just for kicks. None of the standard D&D settings* like Greyhawk or the Forgotten Realms. Share your favorite lesser known non-WotC settings. Vanilla fantasy is fine (actually my favorite), just want something new. Even a website only setting is ok.

*not that there's anything wrong with these settings, just looking for something different to read.

Hârn is about as ‘vanilla’ (I hate that term) as you can get. Humans, dwarves, elves, orcs and a few weird beasts in the wilderness, that’s it!

I’ve never been a believer that you need huge numbers of weird, wacky and often ludicrous creatures to keep a party interested. Nor do I believe in massive quantities of magic or magic items.

My personal ‘suspension of disbelief’ setting must be set very low, as I can’t read many campaign worlds (FR and Scarred Lands are two cases in point) without thinking getting all pedantic about the apparent lack of internal logic and consistency.

Worth to have a look:

Thieves world- I am very impressed, really, impressed, I bought everything related with this setting in pdf, the magic system is delicious, try it you won't regret it.

Ptolus - check monte's website for information

Midnight - I think more of this setting as Morgoth winning the war than Sauron, but it gives a new approach to the classic fantasy setting, perhaps not everybody's cup of tea.

SpirosBlaak hasn't been mentioned yet- a kingdom rather than a planet that is war torn. The populace is a mixture of humans, werecreatures, goblins, dwarves and a new race made from elves, humans and dwarves. Elves are occasional raiders and the others are rare. Has rules for firearms, but otherwise is standard in technology.

Oathbound
Morningstar
Nyambe
Warcraft
Second World Simulation

My setting recommendations are ...

Iron Kingdoms (gritty Full Metal Fantasy)
Midnight (dark, gritty and foreboding)
Scarred Lands (High Fantasy)
Harn (Classic medieval-fantasy)

I've heard fantastics things about Conan and Thieves World, but I haven't had a chance to play them yet.

  • Warlords of the Accordlands
  • Scarred Lands

[Edit: Re-read the OP's post and removed Wilderlands. Wilderlands isn't really "different" -- it's fairly generic fantasy, being a re-issue of the old Judge's Guild AD&D piecemeal setting of the same name.]
I meant different as in stuff that isn't that widely-read or well-known. Nothing wrong with standard fantasy, it's actually my favorite genre. I'm actually already somewhat familiar with WoHF, and wouldn't mind getting my hands on a copy.

Dragon Star, Rokugan, and Iron Kindoms.

I also like doing one-shots of FFG's various Horizon books. You get to relive your favorite cartoons. :)

I had forgotten all about X-Crawl. I don't follow pro-wrestling but the concept of the game sounded quite interesting to me. I've never actually ran or played it but from reading the main book it looks like a lot of fun.

Olaf the Stout

I've actually been trying to find the book for a while. If anyone has the ISBN, I'd appreciate it if you could post it. ;)
