Favoured Class

I'm pretty sure it's just that some races' abilities and feats stack nicely with certain classes, and make for the classic race-class archetypes. Simply a suggested combo for inexperienced (or disinterested it doing all the math to max things out) players.

That's Paizo's Pathfinder RPG (a.k.a. D&D 3.75E) you're thinking of. The current Alpha 2 release has this rule.

Really? I hope that's just a rumor. It sounds like an unnecessarily tight binding between class and race.
