[FDP] Big News!

I am sorry, but when i buy something I should be in control of it as long as I don't distribute it for free or in a way that makes me money.

This "Big Brother" of the pdf format will never get my business.

Most of WW, FGU, GDW, etc, stuff has already been pirated. Long before DTRPG was even a gleem in WW's eye.

Probably the only company whose stuff on DTRPG who hasn't been pirated is Fast Forward, and that's because no one wants to.

(Cheap shot, but true)

Personally, I wouldn't buy anything from FGU after the way they've screwed Jack Herman & Jeff Dee for more than a decade with the "sure, you can buy the V&V trademark... for an ungodly sum of money!" I don't remember the exact amount, since the last time I heard any bitching about it was at least 10 years ago, but it was a six digit number...

And, if you look everywhere piracy occurs, some FFE stuff has been pirated. Just not much, because like you said, no one really likes any of their stuff enough to bother.

No 6 restriction

So is there really not a limit? I didn't think DTRPG had any control over this, and that the registered devices were an Adobe thing.

There is a default encryption setting that can be used to limit a secure eBook in this fashion which I assume is why it is presented on the Adobe FAQ in this manner, but none of the files at www.DriveThruRPG.com have this restriction in place.

Thank you.

That answers my most significant concern.

This is incorrect, actually. The Adobe FAQ is based on the use of Adobe ID, and in fact is correct. If you use Adobe ID for DRM-enabled purchases, your purchase is tied to your Adobe ID account. Your Adobe ID account, in turn, is keyed to the computers you rester under that account. Adobe ID allows you to register only six computers (or make major hardware upgrades to a single computer six times) under the account. The settings in the PDF have absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the limit on the computers the PDF can be read on. The only effect the "default encryption setting" has is whether an ebook can be read on only one of those six machine or all six of them.

However, this only applies for the use of Adobe ID. I have no idea what sort of limitations are applied for MS Passport.

We talked to FGU in 2000 about getting a license to use the V&V logo, and they were looking for $30K. When we stopped laughing, we talked to Jeff Dee for a bit about working on something for us (and shared the FGU story with him). The Jeff Dee project never really happened, because we couldn't really..uh... follow his train of thought. Fun guy, though! :)

Alright, I am trying to drop this by on any thread in which the point was brought up:

DTRPG has updated their "response to misconceptions" link confirming that there is, in fact, a 6 machine limit, contrary to what Steve Wieck had posted. There is some provision to reset machines through Adobe customer service:

Note that you can only have 6 computers activated at any one time; however, the following is from Adobe Support: "If you have reformatted your hard drive or you have a new computer, you can call Customer Service at 800-272-3623 to get your activation reset. Press 1 for sales." We have used this number to reset activations with no difficulty.
