Feasability of having dragon wyrmling in a solo party?

To quote Psion (I think): Rules serve the game, not vice-versa.

Given that it is a solo campaign I'd advocate doing what is fun for you and the player is a better choice than being too hung up on CRs. Just be mindful of the monster you are creating. A red dragon will add a lot of power to the character. Subsequently, it will be that much tougher to challenge the dragon without killing the PC outright. As long as you keep that in mind, do what is fun and fantastic and go with it!

Dragon-as-NPC is just fine. You can always say that the Dragon is sleepy, and therefore not going to come with the PC on any particular story arc (or similar).

Having a hungry, growing, moody, sets-fire-to-stuff-by-sneezing l'il guy around can be a wellspring of adventures, and can certainly get the PC in as much trouble as he can get the PC out of -- especially if Red Dragons are commonly known as not nice.

Don't forget the good old Team Rocket adventures -- powerful forces want to steal that pika--er, wyrmling! Getting around without showing his hand as the Dragon's guardian can be a fun set of trickyness too, and certainly won't be unbalancing. :)

Great points! Thanks! :)

... the only way to hatch the egg is to get an extermely high source of heat, like that of a volcano or river of lava.

lack of heat = low birth weight = pygmy dragon :heh:

Then you can play any games you like with HD, etc.

Still like the brass dragon idea, though...

Have you read the Dragonnomicon? It has advice for adding a wyrminling to the party.
The Blurb for the next issue of Dragon claims that there will be a 20 level dragon class presented there in. Supposedly designed to fit a dragon into the party.
Short of checking out those two optons, I agree with the other posters about doing what you want in a solo campaign. However, perhaps you could set up that there was somewhere the dragon would be better off. If the PC cared for the dragon's well beign that could be an adventure right there. By the end of it you could perhaps gauge how well the dragon was fitting into the campaign and either have the dragon elect to stay with its new friend or leave as appropriate.
