I've always liked the idea of feat chains. Basically, a starter feat and feats that require it or other feats and in turn are slightly more powerful because of it.
I was trying to think up feat chains as a substitute for clerical domains when I hit upon an idea. Not sure if it's original or not and don't particularly care, just thought I'd share it for discussion.
Basically you have a series of feats that generally anyone can take. They may have their own prerequisites like any other feat though.
However, if you have a feat that synergises in some manner with this feat, it gains a boost of some type.
For instance, let's so you get a +5 bonus to any single Strength check once a day or something, whatever. Call it "Oof!"
Let's say there's another feat called "Ugh!" and it gives you a +5 bonus to any single Constitution check once a day. But if you also have the Oof! feat, you get a bonus of +1 to all Strength checks, all the time, when you take the Ugh! feat.
And it could work in stacks, say one in each tier. Say the Oof! feat is a heroic tier feat, the Ugh! feat is a paragon tier and the Oombagoomba! feat is an epic synergy. The Oombagoomba feat can be taken by itself or in conjunction with both or just one of the other two feats. So Oombagoomba! gives you a +5 on Dexterity-based checks, but if you have Oof! you get a +2 to all Strength checks, and if you have Ugh! you get a +1 to all Con checks, and if you have both, then the bonus to Con increases to +2.
This is obviously not a specific template. Whatever boons you get will change for whatever it is meant to represent. And the feat synergies should have some sort of strongly connecting theme. But as a premature, in-situ idea, I think it has legs.
