Feat for a flying mount?

Lord Pendragon

First Post
Say you are a paladin with a griffon mount. A griffon has the following feats:

Iron Will
Multiattack
Weapon Focus (bite)

It has a flight speed of 80ft. (average)

From the SRD:

As a paladin's special mount, the griffon, usually a 7HD creature, is bumped up to 9HD and among other things gains an additional feat.

What additional feat do you think would be most useful for a flying mount? I'm thinking of Hover or Wingover at the moment, though I have absolutely no experience with flying mounts (hence this post asking for advice :p.) I would have gone with Iron Will, but the griffon already has it.

Power Climb and Power Dive are two interesting feats available and can be found in Draonomicon. Though I'd just get hover so you can stay on your mount and occasionally get full attacks.

Interesting. I don't ahve the Draconomicon, though perhaps I'll have to find a way to look through it. :)

Well, I'd only need Hover to get full attacks in the case of actual mid-air combat. A fascinating and thrilling thought. I must admit, I'd only considered the mount's flying ability from an air-to-land battle perspective. Air-to-air...well, there's a whole new ball of wax. Though I'm not sure I'd want to tackle an airborn foe solo in the air.

I suppose the wizard could cast Fly on some of the rest of the party. :)

Hello,
since the Griffons maneuverability is allready average I would instead take Improved Flight from MotW. This feat improves the maneuverability by one to good. This gives you the ability to Hover and you can make a Wingover aswell.

Fly by attack is also useful. It tends to be more so if the Griffon on occasion acts indepedently of the paladin and not just as a mount.

Make sure to get the griffon a "create food and water" item that creates horse meat. It's a good way to keep it from eating the party's horses.

This is a fantastic suggestion! I think this is definitely the way to go. Thanks, Vraister!

Well, this may have been a problem in 3.0, but in 3.5 I assume I can send my mount back to Mt. Celestia to hunt celestial horses there. :p

Improved Flight is really nice, but I just checked the Draconomicum. There is a new 3.5 feat called Improved Maneuverability which gives the same benefit as Improved Flight but with harsher prerequisites. Fly speed 150 and Hover or Wingover.
