Feat for speedy crafting

Metallian

First Post
I was thinking about the "Gnome Tinker" type character concept, and it occured to me that the Craft skill is awfully slow for an adventurer to use, especially if they want to be like "McGuyver the Gnome."

Is this a reasonable feat? Too powerful? Too underpowered?

Speedy Crafting: A character with the speedy crafting feat has a natural aptitude for crafting things with remarkable speed.

Prerequisite: Int 15

Benefit: The character may make Craft checks by the week in gold pieces, by the day in silver pieces, and by the hour in copper pieces.

Normal: A character may make Craft checks by the week in silver pieces and by the day in copper pieces.

It look too powerful for NPCs (compare their earnings with Skill Focus and Speedy Crafting) and too weak for PCs.

I slapped the Int 15 prerequisite on there specifically to keep many NPCs from taking it and screwing up the economy...Int 15 is reasonably high, so if they're that smart they should make tons of money, right?

Then again, that means Int 15 Experts will eventually take over the entire economy, doing the work of 5-7 Int 14 Experts. So, I could give it another Prerequisite, but then no PCs will take it.

Does anybody have any other suggestions for a PC that wants the whole "I whip up gadgets on the fly" schtick?

Your best bet would be to look at spells for this... Minor Creation, Major Creation, Fabricate, etc...

Those are pretty high-level spells to fulfill the character concept of "guy who makes tools and widgets on the fly"...suddenly we're out of the "MacGuyver" concept and into the "mid-level Sor/Wiz" concept.

I like this concept. How about adding a skill focus (craft) prereq? The number of NPCs running around with 2 feats and 15 int is going to be VERY small. Those who do will probably have better ways of making money than churning out shoes all day long.

I thought about that...I think I like the idea, but I have two concerns:

1) A 1st level Human Expert with an Int 15 could take Skill Focus and this new feat with no problem...so adding the extra feat prereq makes almost no difference to (smart) NPC humans.

2) Does it make sense to say "8 Ranks in any Craft skill" as a prerequisite? I don't want to limit the feat to a particular type of Craft skill because I think that would make it too weak.

For faster item creation, just adapt the Metacreative feat from the PsiH.

Doesn't that only apply to Psionic/Magic Item Creation? I'm looking for a way to speed up the creation of nonmagical items (Repeating Crossbows, Springwalls, Alchemical items, etc.)

How about a whole different approach?

A Gnome Tinkerer prestige class. It's got possibilites. To avoid having to totally take over a character, I'd make it a 5-level class with relatively low (say, 5th level) entry requirements.
