Feat Types?

Yeah... I'm going to include BOVD. :)

Thanks for your help guys.
No problem. Kinda interesting... but I want to make very clear that if you don't share what you're doing with this information, I'm going to have to fling copious amounts of e-hate your direction. 'cause I'm very curious.

I'm not at liberty to say, but think world domination, and unimaginable suffering...

Wait... no...

I'm starting a new campaign in the future (not sure how far in the future) and going to do a lot of house ruling. One of the things I'm trying, is a feat gain every level. However, I want to devise a system where instead of simply picking any feat at random, you only have access to certain types at certain levels (semi dependent upon your class.)

IE: At any level you can pick a general feat. (Maybe others) Every 3 levels, however, you can pick a feat from (X) feat group.

I also might include regional feats, but add them as a bonus feat if you choose the region's favored class/race combo. (To encourage people to sort of add to the feel of the world...)

Haven't completely decided on all the technicalities yet. Having a list of all the categories will help with that.

:)

Gotcha. I'm starting up a slightly modified E6 campaign now, and since feats are so integral to that, I've spent a lot of time looking their direction lately. Similar reason, apparently, if a different end goal. :)

I thought about doing an E6 thing, but went a different route.

I'm removing iterative attacks, and tying AC into reflex (so AC increases based on level basically) plus adding disciplines (kind of like more powerful feats.)

Could all turn out to be a mess, but we shall see. :p

Too many general

I thought there were too many "General" ones for me, even in just the core SRD. So I broke them down further. Then because I thought it was helpful to see what's a pre-req for what regarding the combat feats, I made a diagram of them: Better Feat Categories

Funny, I would be tempted to go the opposite way. I really don't see the need for at least 75% of the different types of feats listed so far. General makes sense. Metamagic is kind of a necessity because of the way in interacts with spontaneous casters. Metapsionic can be an important distinction from metamagic depending on how you run psionics.

Almost every other type of feat is just a feat with a different prerequisite or effect. Bardic Music feats just require that specific class ability, ditto for Wild, Psionic and Divine. Exalted and Vile feats just have an RP requirement, as do Heritage and Regional (with the added requirement that you can only take them at first level). Item Creation, Reserve, Weapon Style, Tactical, and Combat Form all just have effects that are slightly more complicated than other feats.

I think it would just be simpler to just sort out feats by their prerequisites and effects, and drop the type except when completely necessary. As it is now, it seems that WotC has added feat types to the list of "must haves" for all new books (along with feats and PrCs), which just makes things overly complicated. For example, what is the huge difference between Weapon Style, Tactical, and Combat Form feats?

Weapon Style feats give benefits to using specific (pre-set) weapons.

Tactical feats give benefits to fighting using certain tactics.

Combat Form feats give benefits to high-WIS fighters.

There's really no overlap between them except in that they're all purely for combat.
