Feats as Rewards

I think you should also watch out giving feats that, while wimpy on their own, are the start of a long chain. Toughness, for instance. (I can't believe it's still only a +3 hp!!!) Or Dodge.

Being one of the players in several games by the author of "The Stink" from Dungeon 105, I can say I know at least 1 GM who gifts his players when he thinks they deserve it.

For example in our previous campaign, which was DnD, my character first had a choice of either learning a new custom made spell or increasing my wisdom by 1 point. This was a gift via a dream from his goddess. I know the other players earned similar gifts though I never learned what they were exactly. Later when my PC died and had to be raised, I found my cohort from the leadership feat I had taken 1 level previous and gained another gift of sorts from the fact our life forces were linked, (my cohort was a ghost, very interesting idea). This gift was the ability to detect undead by sight.

In our current game, which is Farscape, my first PC who is lost in space now, got an Intelligence boost from an ancient artifact. The increased INT stat faded after several days, but I got to keep the few extra skill points from it.

When I run games, I tend to not give extra goodies like this, though I bet if I did the players would forget about them anyway. Too many times I have sat behind my DM screen thinking, "I gave you guys a scroll 2 sessions ago to solve this problem...you've all forgotten about it again, already?!"

Normally I do not give out feats. I have had a couple of books that upon studying, granted feats.

I am however, starting a new campaign with my group and it is low magic to the point of no magic. All PCs are non-spellcasting classes. The only non-outlaw spell casting NPC is the druid. The area in which the PCs play is abberation creature heavy and I have developed an accelerated feat progression for the players to compensate for the lack of magic.

The PCs are in a "foreign legion", military, fight or die atmosphere and will be given certain feats as functions of the rigors of their training (endurance, campaigner, combat reflexes, etc).
