Feats for skills and skills for feats

This is pretty much about what the title says. I want to design something where a character can trade in skill points and get a feat or take a feat and get some skill points. I just got to thinking about how their have been a few threads talking about how some classes ei. Fighters get shafted on skill points and how others get kinda stiffed on feats ei. wizards and rogues. I like the idea of the verisitilty behind this but the biggest questions in my mind are, is this going to be balanced and how many skill points is a feat worth.

I was thinking 5 skill points or so per feat maybe six. Anyway just a thought. As always comments and ideas are always wanted.

Well, there already is such a feat, Open Minded, and it happens to provide 5 skill points. ^_^

Converting skill points to feats should be much more difficult, if even possible. A human rogue with a 14 int, for instance, gets 11 skill points every level...

The danger with trading skill points for feats is that the rogue can potentially get more feats than the fighter. Feats are generally more useful than a couple of skill points.

If it's something you want to do I think you need to look at around 20 skill points to one feat, if only to slow the 14 int rogue to one extra feat every 2 levels... I think the trade this way is probably a bad idea though.

We used to have a "skill" in our group that all classes had as a class skill, every 5 ranks into it you got a free feat. Unlike Speak Language, the rank cap did apply, so if you max it, you would get an additional feat at 2,7,12, and 17.

Fit well with Open Minded, and prevented people from just "buying" tons of feats. We eventually stopped using it though, as nearly everyone would take it. So now we just play with extra feat progression. Makes for a slightly higher powered game, but we like feats. =D

I don't know if this helps at all, but A Game of Thrones d20 has a system of "Defects" which provide extra points that can be traded for more skill points and/or feats

Of course, the defects themselves have drawbacks. . .

@ Starwed
Thanks for the heads up on that feat man.

@wmasters
20 might be a tad steep because it pretty much means that only a rogue or a wizard would ever end up getting feats. But perhaps you are right that it may just not be feasable to go that way.

@lordgrae
That sounds exactly like what I need. Gives some extra feats to those who want to invest in it with out rogues and other high skilled classes getting to many. Thanks for this.

@el-remmen
Not exactly what I'm looking for but an interesting train of thought thanks.
