[Feb] New Comics

Merova

First Post
Hi all!

It's been a while since we've had one of these threads. So, what new comics have you picked up this months? What's hot? Here are a few from me:

Walking Dead #4: The refugees need guns. But the nearest gunstore is six blocks into the zombie-infested city of Atlanta. It's a high tension story. If you like survivalist adventure, this is a great title to check out. (4 out of 5)

Meridian #43: Sephie faces off against her evil uncle and his new sigil-bearer allies. Beautiful art and Kesel's graceful prose makes for a fine read, but this title doesn't exactly excel at high octane slugfest action. I definitely enjoyed reading this story, but it wasn't playing towards its strengths (ie: character interactions and the sense of discovery.) (3.5 out of 5)

Lady Death: A Medieval Tale #11: It's got the same silly plotting and the same shallow characters, but Lopresti's pencils really bring the action to life, as well as creating a lucious setting. Yeah, it's eye candy and fantasy fluff, but there's nothing wrong with that. (3 out of 5)

Dragonlance: Legend of Huma #1: Hmm, I'm mixed about this comic. It's adapted from the novel, which I read as a youngster. I have very strong feelings about it. This comic didn't catch the magic as I remembered it. YMMV. (3 out of 5)

That's all for now. Still reading.

I get a bunch of stuff.

The best from last week:

Supreme Power #7: Man, talk about your teaser endings! Man, I HAVE to have the next issue now!

Hawkman/JSA: Black Reign: Another great, great teaser ending! The Atom finding Mr. Mind? Awesome! I cannot wait to see how this turns out. Luckily for me, an installment is coming out every week! Sweet!

Ultimate Spider-Man #53 Looks like the Black Cat storyline has wrapped itself up now, and I'm a bit mixed on it. I did like how the Kingpin's wife and her illness has been brought in all, but I did think that the resolution with the Black Cat seemed a bit anti-climactic. Also,
why didn't Kingpin just have some of his flunkies dive for the tablet after BC tossed in the water? It's certainly within his means to have it retrieved.

Well, I'm late in my readings, but here's the last batch I got:

Teen Titans 1 & 2: This series' start give me a really good vibe. The Young Justice characters meshed in really well with Cyborg, Starfire and Beast Boy. I specially liked Superboy teasing about Starfire carrying Robin as they fly ("I'm telling Nightwing!").

Outsiders 1 & 2: At first I thought "Ugh" when I heard about this new series. But the first two issues made really sense (specially for a Nightwing-fan like myself... the reasoning Arsenal uses to get Grayson into this is a masterstroke). The new characters Thunder and Grace are really fun, and Grodd is shown as the genius he is.

JSA Princes of Darkness: Still one more issue before this saga ends, and the writing in JSA is EPIC in scale, without getting too convoluted or comedic. Which brings us to...

JLA Trial by Fire: Joe Kelly does NOT write well. His tendency to comedy seems really out of place in the JLA (Giffen & DeMatteis did it so much better back in the old JLI series). The one highlight: when all the inmates of Arkham suddenly become aware of their crimes and wish to be punished by their sins (the Joker screams "Let me die! Let me diiiiie!"), the warden asks Batman "So, what do you make of i-... uh, are you smiling?"

Sojourn 24 & 25: I hope the new writer picks up the pace of the saga. Not every issue has to be about finding the Fragments or explaining the characters, but they should be more action-packed. This is is progressing so slowly that not even Greg Land's art will keep me buying it after a while...

And what's this I hear about Tim Drake hanging his cape and Batman getting a new Robin?

Hi all!

Yeah, Sojourn had a bit of a dry spell there. However, I like Edginton's writing; he's had a good mix of character and action elements, especially in the "Ocean voyage" storyarc. I'm really looking forward to the Skarnhime plotline that kicks off with issue #31. I even wrote a review of it over at Silver Bullet Comics, that you can read by following this link:

On another topic, here's the Diamond shipping list for 2/11:

This week's books:

1602 #7 Great book, Gaiman's subplots are starting to mesh together. Loved the surprise ending of this issue.

Exiles #42 Enjoyed this one. I think that Calafiore's first writing attempt was a success. Looking forward to seeing where he will take the crew.

IronMan #77 Part 5 of 6 on the Tony Stark becoming the Secretary of Defense story. This issue was actually rather predicable from the prior issue. Not bad though. Not sure if I want this director to be permanent or not.

Teen Titans #8 I'm really enjoying this book. I was disappointed when McKone left, but think that Grummett has done a good job of picking up the art chores. As noted above, John's is doing a good job of writing this title. This issue finally clears up the unanswered questions about where the tower came from and why they are in San Francisco.

Knights of the Dinner Table #88 Okay, maybe it's just me but for the past couple of issues this book is starting to feel "tired" to me, like they're just going through the motions. Anybody else think so?
