[Feb] What are you reading?

Last night I finished up "Thieves' World: Enemies of Fortune" which was part of the Thieves' World relaunch that came out around 2002. I really enjoyed it and I was disappointed that it is unlikely that the series will continue.

Wha? I didn't know it had be re-launched! Hmm. This is something to think about. Can you tell me the name of the first book of this re-launch?

Sure. The first book was a novel title "Sanctuary" by Lynn Abby. It takes place around 30 to 40 years after the original anthology wrapped up. It centers on the final days of Molin Torchbearer. I bought it paper back in the Summer of 2003 so they have been around for awhile. I can't speak for anyone else that read it but I really enjoyed it.

Here is a web site that lists all of the new series books that got published.

I think that one of the reasons that the novels may have not sold so well (and therefore, the series has not been continued) was due to a lack of publicity. When I bought "Sanctuary", I had heard nothing about the relaunch. It was just by chance that I saw it in book store that I found out about it.

Reading Glen Cook's "The Tyranny of the Night". Almost finished with it. For me it was tough to get into but has picked up considerably now that I'm about 80% finished. Next book in the series is due out some time this month. I haven't made up my mind if I'm going to purchase it. Right now I'm leaning toward the "no" side of things.

Just finished Steven Brust's "Dzur". Great book, but I'm a huge Brust fan so I'm probably biased.

I've started reading Del Rey's new(ish) R.E. Howard Solomon Kane collection. Very well done and complete (just like the Del Rey Conan stuff) with excellent interior illustration.

I'm re-reading D-Day by Stephen Ambrose. Before that was Designated Targets by John Birmingham. Next up will be 1633 by David Weber and Eric Flint.

Rereading Master and Commander by Patrick O'Brien, Warhammer Fantasy Battle and the associated Lizardmen army book, The Battle for Spain by Anthony Beevor.

I'm still working on The Aenied and The Odyssey as well as Carl Richard's The Founders and the Classics. Started reading The Fairy-Tale Detectives by Michael Buckley to determine its suitability for my students. Also reading Popper's Penguins to my daughter. I'll probably start Plutarch's Lives by the end of the month, or maybe Herodotus. I'm still dithering.
