Fencing

The main reason for the Ambidexteriy prerequisite is so that he can go, "Hah hah! I am NOT left handed!"

This opinion never ceases to amaze me (nothing personal). The basis of requiring Ambidexterity for the Duelist class on the fencing match between Wesley and Inigo, I mean. Now, mind you, I fully believe even WotC felt this was one of the main reasons to include it as a prereq.

What baffles me is how people can attribute the Ambi feat to either character. Quite the opposite. It is quite clear neither one of them was ambidextrous.

If they were, then fighting with their left hand would have made no difference. The whole point to Inigo wanting to fight left handed was to handicap himself. There would be no handicap if he were ambidextrous.

Likewise, Wesley's fencing skills were equally lessened by his use of his left hand as well. He chose to fight left handed because Inigo did, basically.

For this reason, I removed the feat as a prerequisite and replaced it with Skill Focus (Tumbling).

Anyway, that's my take.

"Inconcievable!" :)

You keep using that word... I do not think that it means what you think it means.

I should remind everybody that Austria is populated entirely by criminals.

LOL...

Why you've stumbled into one of the worst blunders in human history... The worst is, NEVER get involved in a land war in ASIA!!! But second only to that is... don't get involved with a Spainard when DEATH is on the line!!!

I thought that was Australia -- which it is :)

(This from someone who lives in a country founded by criminals, gold hunters, and religious outcasts -- I mean, Georgia was a penal colony, and Rhode Island was founded by a guy who wanted freedom of religion! We're fooling ourselves when we say that the Pilgrims founded the United States.)

Thanks for the input, guys! It's been great.

I really think duelist should replace ambidex with the feat that lets you fight after 0 hp.

"HELLO! My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." "STOP SAYING THAT!"

In a related note - I second the Quintessential Fighter reference - they have a couple PrCs, a few fighting styles, and a lot of feats, almost all of which are balanced (ignore the expert bowman. Threatens 20' with a bow at 2nd level. Um.). I wish my duelist had access to that book when I started.

A homemade class might give something like off-hand parry at early levels (+2), increasing by 2 every 3 levels (as Tempest), include the canny defense (int bonus to ac in no armor) from the Duelist, and lose the penalty to off-hand fighting (absolute ambidexterity) at highest levels - the ideal duelist is a mix between tempest and duelist, I'd say.

And they might get better disarm/trip attacks (improved trip at x level f'r instance).

How 'bout a d12 hit die and some specials that grant you AC bonuses or something? It just occurred to me that the barbarian is really set up to do the same kind of thing, i.e. fight with little or no armor. Of course, the barbarian gets really angry like Captain Furious, so that's not really in the feel of the duelist.

Mystery Men -- gotta love it!
