FFG's Path of Magic opinions?

Any reviews of it out there?

Any opinions of it?

Is the Bard stuff any good?
Do they do anything interesting with Sorcerers or it just mostly Wizard focused?

I'm trying to decide between a couple of books as my next purchase and this is one of the entries on my list.

(the others are AEG's Mercenaries and Kenzer's Vilain Design Handbook).

I got the book Tuesday and look through it onec, and am rereading it in depth now. I am thinking of doing a full reveiw this weeken. I will tell you that is is a very good book. A nice compliment to B&T. There is very little over lap and it contains some nice ideals.

There is one part that I have studied and that is the Items of power. The expendible focuses and the Eldrith Staff sections are great and easly added to any campain. There is a very errors/poorly writen power in the Eldrith Staff section but nothing that can't be easly fixed. The Fonts of Power is the hardest part to understand and also will not fit in every campain.

To add a qusetion to arcady's...

How does this new book from FFG compare to Spells & Spellcraft (also from FFG) that I bought a while ago? Any redundancies?

Thanks :)

There is little to no overlap with Spells and Spellcraft... but there is a huge amount of overlap with The Quintessential Wizard book from Mongoose. Both have lots of PrCs and a few spells, both have rules for Mages creating their own unique magical staves, both have (short) rules on building a mages tower, and both have additional feats which are somewhat similar (like ones that reduce Arcane Armor penalties by 10%/ feat...) The Path of xxxx series does have 2 interesting features of its own... First, they each introduce the concept of Legendary Classes... sort of super Prestige classes. (Don't ask me why...) Each also introduces Schools for the class... combat schools for warriors, magic schools for wizards, etc. These schools add minor abilities about every other level in exchange for some XP. This is an interesting idea that I like... it adds variety without actually having the character change classes.

IMHO, it looks like you really only need 1 of these books, and since I already owned Quint Wizard, I did not buy Path. If I did not already have Quint, it would be a hard choice...

No, no redudnancies. Entirely differt focus. Frex, no spells in PoM.

I just got it last night, but thus far I am afraid I don't like it as much as PotS or Spells & Spellcraft. Some prestige classes are pretty good (and I do like the "easy to integrate & conceptually well supported" path that FFG is taking with prestige classes), but the legendary classes don't excite me as much as the ones in PotS. The optional rule stuff is more inspired in Spells & Spellcraft.

they don't me because let's say Straight Wiz20 fights one of the Legendary classes.

Wizard: Let's duel.

Legend: I have lot's of cool abilities, but can we refrain from 9th level spells?

Wizard: Why? I want to do some uber magiks!

Legend: I took this Legend Prestige Class and well, I lost 5 levels of spell casting.

Wizard: *haha* Time Stop.

That's the problem, Wizards and Sorcerers can NOT lose spell casting levels, even for cool abilities.

The legendary classes are no worst the multiclassing as a fighter or a rouge. A couple are aimed at either bards or multiclass characters. They are nice nice type classes that will be rare because of how specilized they are. I think while they are not for everyone they are blanced and useful.

What's PotS?

Path of the Sword. FFG's book for Rangers, Fighter, Monks, and Barbarians.

Not epic. You need quests to get into them and the prerequites are pretty tough. You need to be 12th level or high tro qualify. They are very versatile.
