FFG's Path of the Sword

Crothian

First Post
This is a pretty good book. It's made for Barbarians, Fighters, Monks, and Rangers. It does a good job of including stuff for all. I was hoping for a few more options that dealt with a Rangers spellcasting. This seems to be an area of the class no one wants to expand on other then adding spells.

The best part of the book is Acrobatic Combat. Rules to do certain, classic manuevers that many different characters will want to make use of.

For me this book slipped in under the radar. I wasn't even aware of it's existance till I saw it today at the store. FFG, another good solid book.

I picked up the book last weekend. Overall, I am pretty impressed with it. I really liked the combat maneuvers, the rage feats, and the two non-magic ranger variants (hunter and outdoorsman). I haven't finished reading the section on mounts yet, but it looks really useful. Most of the prestige classes were ok, although I am not a big fan of those. I do wish a little less of the book had been devoted to prestige classes, with the extra space going to something like fighting styles, mercenary companies, generating followers for high level fighter PCs, etc. I'd have to agree, its a solid book, like all of the rest of the Legends & Lairs series.

I agree that less space on the Prestige classes would be nice, but they did give a lot of information on how to use some of them. The orginaztions are well thought out and easy to use.

The jury is still out on the Legendsary Prestige classes though. Soem of those powers are very strong. Especially since you can take it later to increase the power. You can take the two attribute bonuses at levels four and five to get +4 to one attribute, and +5 to another. That's pretty solid.

I picked it up a couple of days ago, but haven't had time to give it more than a quick flip-through yet (he says, as he whiles away his evening online.) I like what I see so far on first glance. I'm curious about the different schools I see listed - I'll have to try to read that section before I fall asleep tonight. How are the variant rangers? Anyone with plans to run one anytime soon? I may have to bump this up toward the top of my list of d20 stuff I've bought and haven't gotten around to reading yet. Sigh...

I like the look of the alt rangers, but they get rid of spells. I think people reallky underestimate the power of a rangers spells. It really adds to their power.

I'm glad you guys are enjoying the combat maneuvers, I thought it was a neat way to add some flavor and excitement to the game without adding "Yet Another Feat Chain (TM)." :)

It really does. The book also doesn't overlap with S&F or Quint Fighter, which was something I had orginally worried about when I picked it up.

Are you guys doing this for the other classes as well?

Yep! Path of Magic (Brd/Sor/Wiz) should be out at Gencon, then later in the year you'll see Path of Shadow (Rog) and Path of Faith (Clr/Dru/Pal).

We've got many of the same authors doing each of the books, so I'm hoping for a consistency in quality, rules, and feel throughout the series. I'm excited about it!

How long til Path of magic hits retail stores? I just got Path of the sword this week and I really like it especially the legendary classes, not quite Epic level but close :)
