Fiend Folio: 30 Years of Flumph

I love the Fiend Folio. And there's a reason I really love how 4e assembles monsters. And thanks to Asmor for his awesome Monster Maker.

There technically is no such thing as a slashing or piercing weapon in 4E - probably better to call out weapon groups - Critical hits from light and heavy blades, Axes, Spears, Bows, Crossbows or Picks ....

Or do it the quicker opposite way, all criticals from weapon attacks except from Flails, Hammers, Maces, Slings, Staffs or Unarmed weapons...

You probably missed your passive perception roll. I've already commented on that (See below).

There is nothing preventing the DM from selecting a weapon group or a specific weapon type. It is cleaner and requires less writing in the statblock to say blunt weapon, piercing weapon or slashing weapon, rather than having to put an "exception" or "inclusion" to each weapon group or specific weapon. If you want to do so, knock yourself out. Me, I prefer simpliciyt and 4e allows me to create the statblock as simply or as complicated as I want to.

You will also notice immunity to Blunt Weapons and Vulnerability to Piercing and Slashing weapons. This is one reason I like 4e monster design. Those types of vulnerabilities/immunities, don't "exist" per se. But the 4e design space does not "break" by adding them for a specific monster.

Me? I'm all about the dire corbies. Love those guys. Almost wiped an entire party out with them in an Eberron game I ran a few years back.

Which is one more reason that I love the fact that our very own Plane Sailing created the shadow demon (along with the quillan and the stunjelly.) Makes me grin every time I think about it.

Wow, that's is really cool. Yet another reason why EN World is so great. That must have been a kick when he saw the Shadow Demon in the cartoon.

Slight tangent but Plane Sailing's RL name is a great CoC character's name. I'm going to use it if I play that game again. Giving the creator's credit was another great thing about the Fiend Folio.

Really? With those happy, vapid eyes and big smiling faces?

I dunno. A pack of these guys constantly moving towards you while always grinning could be a little unsettling.

Imagine being swamed by them like this guy.

My favourite FF monster was the Son of Kyuss, later reanimated as the Spawn of Kyuss in a megamodule series!

I did wonder why Nilbogs hadn't taken over the world. There aren't *that* many clerics/healing potions/etc. around, and they didn't have *that* many spells.
