I wonder how much the two versions differ from one another.

Well, I don't think they would object too hard if you type in the stat-blocks... We could compare them.

I also thought that they were trying to avoid doing the creature overlap with the FF and ToH.

Yes. And they are trying, but not too hard. Basically, they are reprinting the most interesting ones. I.e., their own dark creeper, their own archfiends, but not their own flumph.

There's about 400 monsters in the TOH. About 300 of them are conversions. If WotC reprints 30 of them (and I think we're still far from the count), that'll be only 10% of overlap -- and splitted on several books with that.

Also, you have overlaps between several WotC books as well. And they are not necessarily consistant (Genasi in the FRCS are not the same as those in the monster compendium, the banshee in the MM2 is different from the Keening Spirit (same thing) in City of the Spider Queen, the pseudonatural template from the Manual of the Planes or Tome & Blood is widely different from the one in the Epic Level Handbook, etc.).

Actually, the Half-troll template appeared way back in Bastion's Minions....

Which means that the templates will likely be different.

Or, they could have used Bastion's, seeing as how it was OGC. But yea, it'll likely be different.
