[Fiery Dragon] Of Sound Mind available as a PDF!

Klaus

First Post
Fiery Dragon Productions has released the acclaimed adventure Of Sound Mind as a PDF through RPG Now! .

Of Sound Mind was written by Kevin "Piratecat" Kulp, and constantly pops up in "best 3e adventures" threads as one of the most entertaining and creative adventures since 3e came out.

Although written for 1st level characters and with psionics in mind, OSM contains easy and quick guidelines for scaling the adventure difficulty and for running it with magic instead of psionics.

Also available at RPG Now! are Counter Pack 4: Eldritch Horror & Occult Investigators (the tentacled one), Queen of Lies (by Monte "Who?" Cook) and To Stand On Hallowed Ground (a double adventure by Mike "Lieber" Mearls and James "Insert Clever Monicker" Bell).

It's nice for the folks that didn't have the opertunity to buy the original, but can we ever expect any new adventures/supplements from Fiery Dragon? It kind of feels like that FDP fell of the face of the earth when it stopped being published by WW. Atleast around here...

Hi, Cergorach!

FDP's plans for 2004 were outlined by the inimitable James "Wanna Ring My" Bell in January's Dragon's Breath: http://www.fierydragon.com/DB/DB_JAN21_2003.htm

In summary:
Counter Collection 5: Summoned Creatures is out now.
Counter Collection Gold should be hitting retailers in the coming weeks.
Arriba Espana, the first Counter Strike mini-game, will be available in June
June/July should see the release of Counter Collection: Digital in CD format
Autumn Mist and Battle For China (also Counter Strike) to follow after that.
August sees the Atomic City mini-game released.
September should have the Character Collection.
October brings forth Counter Collection 6: Mutants & Space Adventures.

So FDP has hardly falen off the face of the earth... ;)

Well in interesting D20 title terms it has. Counters just aren't as big a market as plastic/metal miniatures, and these days almost everyone that wants to use miniatures has some (cheap mageknight or d&d commons for example). A shame really, FDP produced some really good D20 material in it's time...

Well, you can count my orders of CCV and CC: Gold in.

I love counters; I definitely find I get much better gaming value from them (and using money on other game books).

I have no idea about FD's finances, but from what I understand counters, and gaming accessories in general (as opposed ot game books) are rather profitable. In today's d20 landscape, trying to sell sourcebooks, classbooks, or especially adventures is getting increasingly prohibitively competitive. Also, game accessories have the advantage of potentially reaching hte whole D&D market, rather than the small portion that buy d20 products.

I suppose that Fiery Dragon was more famous in the first year of the d20 era because there was less competition then. Now, there's a whole sea of d20 publishers and it's harder to stay noticed.

Interesting point. In our experience, Counters have performed much MUCH better than our adventure releases. Unfortunately, we can't afford to release products that aren't expected to make money...much less break even. And, at current sales levels, there's just no way for us to release a product, maintain our standards, and sell enough copies to generate a profit.

Having said that, it's not out of the question that you'll see new adventures from us debut in PDF form. Adventures are our first and greatest love, so we could never abandon them completely ... but, given time constraints, full-time jobs, families, and financial factors, we must devote our resources to those areas that generate revenue for the company.

As for "dropping off the map after leaving S&S" ... here are two things to consider: 1) we've actually released far more products and generated more profit on our own than with S&S, and 2) I wouldn't be surprised to see an S&S logo on a product or two of ours in the future. The very near future, actually. :) Wait and see.

Will Counter Collection Gold include the summoned creatures?

I have to agree that counters are a fabulous value. I do like the D&D minis, and they are relatively cheap, but counters are much more versatile. And, until WotC gets around to making the Huge and larger minis, counters are where it's at for dragons, giants, and other big things.

FWIW, as a testimonial, I ran a Living Greyhawk game some time ago using various Fiery Dragon counters for all of the NPCs and monsters. I also made various counters available as PCs for anyone who didn't have a figure already. The players thought it was great. Then they wanted to keep the counters of their "kills"... I had to put the kibosh on that. :)

Any chance of getting Plague of Dreams on pdf? I'm reading through the pdf of MYG Seige on Ebonring Keep and it got me curious if your module for Monte's setting will ever be in this format.
