This book takes rangers beyond the ordinary with variant ranger abilities for certain races, two new variant ranger base classes (the beastmaster and strider), three new PC races who favour ranger classes (the uldra, wood dwarf and wood giant), and two new ranger-flavoured prestige classes (the bounty hunter and slayer).

The standard ranger abilities fit well with most human, half-elf and half-orc ranger character concepts. However, the flavour and function of these abilities do not suit the other races as well, to varying degrees. Part I provides alternative abilities for dwarf, elf, gnome and halfling rangers that can be used in your game to make rangers of these races better reflect their racial traits.

A beastmaster is king of the forest, master of the jungle. He is a wild man, attuned with animals as much as he is with his own race. A beastmaster typically shuns civilization, preferring to live off the land in the wild places, seeking the companionship of the animals that he knows so well. Among others of his own race, a beastmaster generally keeps to himself, intent on maintaining his watch over the surroundings rather than partaking in social interaction. A beastmaster's abilities include multiple animal companions and an ear-splitting howl.

A strider is the ultimate woodsman, the perfect scout. His abilities revolve around wilderness travel and the senses. He relies on his senses to keep himself and his allies out of danger. At higher levels a strider develops senses that other members of his race simply do not have, such as tremorsense and blindsight. It is nearly impossible to sneak up on or surprise a high-level strider; he probably heard, saw, smelled or felt you coming before you even knew he was there.

The uldra are guardians of large animals of the forests, plains, tundra, or foothills. They revere and protect bears, bison, boars, elk, reindeer, wolves, and all other large beasts. Uldra are found most often in cold tundra environments, but many also live in forests
and in the foothills of mountains. Uldra are small and quick, and are known for their short tempers.

Also known as oakmen, wood dwarves are reclusive denizens of deep, dark forests. They are guardians of the trees, of the animals, and of nature itself. In the forest, they are not likely to be seen, unless they wish to be.

At home amongst the mighty trees, wood giants are solitary denizens of the forest. Towering over other woodland creatures, their imposing presence makes the unofficial kings of the woodlands. Though slow to anger, wood giants can be devastating warriors. They are surprisingly agile for their size, and possess ample cunning.

A bounty hunter pursues his quarry with an aim to bringing them back alive. He hunts his prey for money, for glory, for fun or for more personal reasons. Perhaps the bounty hunter was wronged years ago and now seeks retribution. In any case he views killing his target as a failure, and will do so only if his own life is at stake.

A slayer is similar to a bounty hunter in many ways. Their methods, reputations and abilities are often quite similar. There is one very important difference, however; where a bounty hunter seeks to capture and subdue his quarry, a slayer seeks merely to eliminate it.
