"Fighter" Character Concepts

A friend of mine needs to make a new character as his current one bit the big one. He really only likes to play "fighter" type classes as he doesn't want to bother with casting spells. He is more of a hack and slash type when it comes to combat, as opposed to the fireball chuckers.

Anyway, in the hopes to not make a "cloned" version of his last character, I was wondering if anyone had any real good fighter-type ideas. Ready for the restrictions part?

His last character was a Fighter 5 / Rogue 3. He went with the Whirlwind Attack feat chain, using a Flaming Great Axe. This is what we DO NOT want to recreate.

He would consider another Fighter or even Ranger. He may also be interested in playing a Barbarian, Rogue, Monk (OA or Core), Samurai (OA), or Soehi (OA). Paladin is out. Or any other logical combination thereof (ie no Samurai Barbarians unless there is a real good "believeable" reason these two classes could work together).

A few more things. As I said, he is more of a up in the face hack and slasher, so your typical archer template is out. We have already had a few Spiked Chain wielders, so we'd like to stray away from that as well.

He would prefer being Human, but he might be persuaded to play a Dwarf or even Half-Orc.

One concept we were toying with is a Throwing Axe user that can use the Axes in melee, and throw them at fleeing opponents.

The character would be level 6 with 34 point-buy and the currect character wealth for their level.

Lastly, the books we can use are: The Core ones, OA, FR, MoF (for magic items and such), the Swashbucker Adventures handbook (neither of which we have, but a player in the group does so we can use things from this book as well), and possibly the Quint. Fighters book (we'll need to buy this if there are some good concepts in there). Sorry, but PsiHB is out =(

I just can't come up with any more "original" fighter concepts that we haven't tried already, there are only so many you can make. If anyone can suggest some concepts, it would really help us get the ball rolling on his new character.

Random thought: Have him roleplay some non-combat aspect of a fighter. For example, my recent Dwarf had a Scottish accent and would frequently mention his "wee axe". Long ago, I had a fighter who'd mention his "Longsword +1, +3 vs. Orc babies". There's more to a fighter than fighting -- but it doesn't have to be much! (:

Cedric.
aka. Washu! ^O^

The Throwing Axe thing is great. Just have him carry like 6 or more on his person, he is always armed for melee or missile combat.

Go part way up the Two-Weapon Fighting & Point Blank & Far Shot for good close-in death.

Add Improved Trip so you can knock them prone with impunity and get all kinds of bonuses to execute or disarm them.

The Singh rager in OA is basically a samurai/barbarian. The D&D "barbarian" class is really more of a "berserker", when you come down to it. There's no reason why you couldn't let anyone take it, regardless of character type or personality.

Since the previous character was probably a mobile, lightly-armoured guy (fighter/rogue), this time you might want to go for the more typical tank in plate. Be a powerhouse with a big sword, and enough metal cladding that noone can touch you.

Reach weapons (except spiked chains) are underused but make great charater concepts. Go for the Expertise feat chains (spring attack, improved trip, improved disarm...) That would make a fancy fighter, like a swashbuckler but with a bigger weapon.

How about a human fighter with a halberd, and all the fun feats that can go along with it?

Expertise
Weapons Specialization
Dodge
Mobilitiy
Spring Attack
Combat Reflexes
Knock-Down
Power Attack
etc.

Here's a character idea I want to get around to playing one day. The son of the executioner to a disposed lord. No longer having a position to inherit he sets out on his own. I wanted him to have a new exotic weapon, executioners sword. Like one of the square tipped german execution swords (stats like a mercurial greatsword with out the mercury nonsense.) Use the power attack/cleave tree, death blow from S&F, maybe some sunder/improved sunder fun, power lunge, basically anything that screams smash. Young, happy go lucky (despite the grim nature of his background), big sword.

Hey, you could be the cub from Lone Wolf and Cub!

I found glaive wielding fighters/barbarians with combat reflexes, power attack and cleave to be very effective. At low levels you can kill almost any monster trying to close with you and due to the 10' reach you have lots of opportunities to attack other foes within reach by cleaving. Should a monster come close to you and you cannot attack it with the glaive, just step back 5' (like the wizards do) or give him a punch with your armor spikes and your improved unarmed combat feat. Even without the improved unarmed combat feat does this fighter pose a dire threat to spellcasters without high concentration scores.

Thank you, very good suggestions so far. We did consider the Spring Attack chain with a Reach weapon, so that is a good possibility as well. He may even go for the heavier platemail this time as well.
